Help me identify my motor/heads/water pump.
 

Hi Everyone,

My water pump has decided that it wants to leak coolant out of the little hole on it's bottom/front. I'm 99% sure that I have a "long" water pump but I wanted to double check with y'all before I go buy one.

My truck is a bit of a Frankenstein. I know the heads aren't original but I don't know about everything else... I had a conversation with a mechanic friend a few months back and he figured I have "fuel injected" center bolt heads mounted on an "older" block. I figure the water pump/alt/ps probably came off the same motor as the heads but that's really just a guess.

So... What do you guys think? Are there some tell tale signs or casting numbers that I can use for identification the different parts? I'm really just looking for a way to get the right parts for the job without removing the old parts and dragging them down to the store with me.

Sure does look like a long water pump which is junk if coolant is coming out of the "weep hole".
I does look as if the heads are not original and the fan shroud has been trimmed off to get it right with the fan. If there is space between the water pump and the timing chain cover it is probably long and if it is almost touching it it is short. These trucks had a short pump originally.

I took a look at short and long replacements at the parts store. The long looks very different with a lot more ribbing and support out towards the fan blades. This is what the one on my engine looks like.

I'm going to take some measurements just to be safe. When I order a pump should I just ask for a "long pump for a 350 chevy" or should I ask for a "water pump for a 1978 chevy truck"?

If memory serves me correct take off one of the valve covers and the heads are stamped with numbers to tell you what they are...

don't worry about the heads...

as stated, if you can see between the water pump and the timing chain cover then it's a long pump, almost touching then short.

I'd take it off (you have to anyway) and go to the parts store. They will have them both in stock for about $25 or so. The main concern is that the pulley mount is the same height as the original... if you lay it falt on the counter that is...

Easy fix but you will need a large drain pan to catch antifreeze and then another bottle to fill it up again. Be sure to mark which holes the bolts came out of, inspect your belts since you have to take them off anyway.

When you go to the parts store,if you need a short pump, ask for a pump for a 307, as 307,s only came as a short configuration.

The centerbolt valve covers are a giveaway you have 87 or newer cylinder heads. Look on the block back where the bellhousing attaches and you should see a casting # or possibly a displacement casting (5.7l or 5.0l) if it is a later block as well.

You have a long pump on yours. The alternator bracket is one of the giveaways as well as the reinforcing webbing on the pump itself. You can see enough of the pump that you can tell it has about 1/2" clearance between the rear plate and the timing cover.

Hey everyone. Thanks for the replies. I ended up ordering a long water pump from Jegs and the fit was perfect. I also switched over to an electric fan.

Thanks guys.

Here's another shot showing how much room switching to an electric fan freed up. I have a single 12" fan right now but I will upgrade to dual 12" with a shroud next spring. Current daytime temps here are around 40º and the fan hasn't even turned on yet.

OK I just finished with the same problem you got .If your looking to go to orig equipent the you will need a short water pump ,A new orig power steering pump,and a clutch fan pulley and crank shaft pulley Cause the stuff you have bolted to the front of you engine is for early 80s truck and there no slow way to do it except all at once cause nothing will line up if you dont. Your welcome LOL
