Preparing to start brake work on my 74 4WD
Hey all,
I am preparing to start some brake work on my 74 Full Time 4wd blazer. I have never done brakes on a 4wd and would like some tips. I have heard things from a few folks about a deep bolt that needs a special socket but that is about all. Any tips of the trade or tool advice would be much appreciated! Thanks Scott |
Re: Preparing to start brake work on my 74 4WD
I have a 72 w/ D44 diffs. I think they are similar for quite a few years after that. I didn't need any special tools for the brake work, but finally got a puller to get the spindles off to do the ball joints. BTW, you might want to check the ball joints.
The manual said gently tap the spindles to remove them. Ha! |
Re: Preparing to start brake work on my 74 4WD
you will need a 3/8" allen wrench for the brake caliper bolts
you will need a c clamp to compress the brake pistons back in. if you are going to change the rotors you will need the hub/spindle nut socket, a pair of snap ring pliers. |
Re: Preparing to start brake work on my 74 4WD
Is the hub/spindle nut socket something common I can get from the tool shop or parts store (can it be rented)
What is involved in checking / replacing the balljoints while this is all apart? |
Re: Preparing to start brake work on my 74 4WD
the socket can be bought at the parts store for about $10
