Injector to carb on my '87
 

I'd like some input if anyone else has done this ....

My boss just switched from a TBI factory injector, factory puter & distributor to a holley 670, edelbrock intake, MSD 6 & a basic HEI on his '90 SS454 p/u with great results. For a smog 54 it runs right along .....

I'd like to do the same BUT not change the intake. I'm not sure if the smaller runners of the TBI intake will really make that much difference than the edelbrock intake. Would a spacer assist the new carb? How much of a spacer?

Why the change? I've had the TBI off ...... replaced the injectors & am just plain tired of depending on 22 year old parts & wires ...... screw them. I can fix it on the side of the road my way. I need a bandage the factory way.

Anyone?????

I have always been told that you have to go with a different intake.

In my opinion, it would be crazy to swap from the TBI to carb.

I have a 91 GMC that Ive done this too, Though I swapped motor and all, but same principle. All you need is a stock 4-bbl intake that will bolt up. Beside that it shouldnt be to hard.

I want to go the other way. I would love to put a TBI or even prot injection on my 85 SBC, but I know it would cost alot.

Greenlee ..... really ...... crazy?? I have already driven the boss's truck with this conversion ..... it runs the nuts. Much better than MY truck. That is why I will contemplate the change.

Sarge ..... you want the parts when they are taken off?? Pay shipping & p/u a harness & your in.

I thought that the intake was ok but needed a spacer due to the real short runners for the injection system.

a carb cannot bolt to a tbi intake. its a tiny weird shaped 2 hole opening. there is not an adapter that would work and you wouldnt want to run one anyhow. you have to swap the intake out. tbi is not and was never intended for all out performance. it can run better than it does now with the current parts by having a chip burned for it. obviously a 2 barrel tiny restrictive throttle body and a crappy intake isnt going to flow like a 4bbl carb and performance intake.

I would love too but I have a small block not a big block. If Joe has a bog block and he can use it I will pass.

Not an issue guys ....... I also have another set up off my bosses truck .... less the tbi. but intake & related parts, distbtr., coil, some brakets that I'll also GIVE AWAY FREE - he doesn't want it - I rescued the stuff from the dumpster.

You will have to get an intake that will bolt up to your heads, the tbi motors have the 4 center bolts that go into the heads more or less straight up and down. I am sure edelbrock makes one, just have to order the right one to fit your heads.

on mine in the el camino i just wallowed out the holes, and used some washers, hasnt given me a problem for 3 years :D

A friend of mine put the TBI om his 73. He had to switch fuel tanks too as the fuel pumps were in the tanks. Tanks are different from 1973 to 87. Here in California 1976-1981 are ok to work with some what, but the 1982-86 you can get a dime for due to smog regs. tha feed back carbs are #*2T. Changing from FI to a carburator in California you just made yourself a parts truck.

Well ...... thank goodness I'm going the other way & I'm NOT living in Cally. The truck was bought out there but I shipped to the Atlanta area.

I'll keep you posted on the progress. I'll be ordering my parts from sumitt next week.
