solid front axle

Well i have a 94 GMC Sierra 4X4 and ive been thinking about taking out the IFS and puting a solid front axle instead so i lift with leaf springs. Any pros or cons about doing this?

I know a guy that did that he put 4 link suspension on it. Had coils all the way around. He seemed to ba happy with it. All he used the truck for was mudathons so it had to hold up. He wife did drive it to work a few times and said it drove good.

If you put a solid front axle on, you need to get a Ford axle. Chevy solid axles have the banjo on the passenger side where the IFS banjo/driveline is on the drivers side. Ford is on the drivers side.
There was an article in Petersens 4wd about doing the swap. I think you better be pretty handy with a welder and such.
Offroad unlimited makes a kit

It looks like you need to do a crossover steering to, so I would use a Dana 60 as they are a lot easier to do a cross over on because you can bolt a conversion arm on easy. Do a search on ebay for dana 60 and you will always see a few for sale.

I know you will have a more stable offroad rig with the solid axle, but it would be a lot of work. Also I think you need a reverse pinion axle and they are like gold. I just bought an 86 1-ton for the reason that it was one of the last of few years that a Chevy made a solid axle. You might consider that option first as it would be cheaper and you would get an NP205 t-case, which is the strongest thing around

This is a Toyota swap
