Why I am asking is a buddy of mine just found this 79 SB truck and was asking me some things about it and I have never seen this before. It has a SB gas motor in it now, but it was a Diesel that looked to came in it stock. Here is some pics and some labels I found on it. See what you all think. It's a cool little truck just need some work.

Ok, this brings a question up in my mind. Was the 6.2 a gas based, diesel engine like the 5.7 or was it a diesel based, diesel engine?

Re: Did they make a 79 SB Diesel?

the 6.2 was designed as a diesel and was better than the 5.7 for obvious reasons. i dont feel that either one is that great of an engine but really dont feel like going through the 6.2 argument again.

77-81 Olds 5.7 diesel. Based on a gasoline engine design but the engines are much more than "converted from gas".

82-92 (and later in some applications) Detroit Diesel designed 6.2 diesel. Shares engine mount and bellhousing dimensions with the SBC. Designed from the get go as a diesel engine. Never a real power house, but I know of many (including 2 in the family) that went over 500k without lifting a valve cover. My 86 has 305k and drove me 200 miles to Thanksgiving dinner today at 75 mph and got 23 mpg doing it.

The truck may be a 79 but, the grille in it is a 1980.
