68 BB 396 Power steering
Most of the stuff we do is on BB but it is nearly all 72. We are putting a BB into a 68 that came with power steering (1967-68 power assist). Question..When we put in the 396 with BB power steering pump, will it hook up to the 68 power assist steering box or do we need to add 69-72 type power steering box. Thought I knew but the more I thought the more I knew I did'nt know.

Re: 68 BB 396 Power steering
I'm gonna guess you need the newer style box. My 68 is a factory BBC truck and it came with that kind. I haven't seen a 68 BBC with the ram type.
I'm pretty sure the only 68 trucks that had the ram were early 68's, maybe GM needed to clear out some leftover 67 parts. |

Re: 68 BB 396 Power steering
Wouldn't it be easier to just convert over to the newer style box and pump? Unless you are going for originality, but if it were me, I would use the more reliable unit, especially with the weight of a big block.

Re: 68 BB 396 Power steering
On the power assisted setup, the hydraulic lines go from the pump to the control valve, then to the ram. I would use the newer type, then you would have lines from the pump directly to the power steering box, but you may have to use spacers or "dimple "your frame to properly mount the new power steering box. There are lots of threads about that on here.

ges 55 I think we are going with later style pump and box. We will use spacers. Thanks for your input Paul
