Yep - cool pics! I'll try not to duplicate those, except as follows -

I had two uncles that drove for FJ Boutell, hauling Buicks out of Flint, Michigan:

This is my Uncle Joe Toby; he actually loaned the money to Mr Boutell to start his business:

You may have heard "urban legends" about a Buick show car that was being transported on the top of the hauler and then got it's roof clipped off by an errant overpass (they had repaved the road and the driver didn't realize)? That was Uncle Joe; his relationship with Mr Boutell probably saved his job and the Buick lived on as a convertible.

;)

Wow! Very cool! It looks like they even squeezed a C/40-60 in the middle there!

Something else to ponder: This was in the mid-60's before the days of diesels with anything resembling serious power. That rig has somewhere around 18 tons of trucks, plus the weight of the truck and trailer... and probably has a couple hundred HP and a few hundred lb-ft of torque with a 10 or 12 speed. That must have been one SLOW ride up any kind of hill!!

Big time! Driveline durability was a problem, too -

My Uncle Hal was the other uncle who drove for Boutell. He had a favorite route that he would take every week: he'd leave from Flint on Monday and then head east, ending up in some hilly terrain in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, etc and then back home by Friday.

One week he was humming along and, after driving a while in the hills, the brakes on the truck went out!

No problem, right? because you can always downshift and use the engine braking to slow down....

...until you twist the driveshaft in two. Then - you've got a real problem!

He rode it out, steering around the curves until the truck started up the other side. As it came to a stop on the upward path, and then started rolling back, he cut the wheels so that the truck would back off the side of the road...which it did, and off the side of the hill down into a valley.

As he trudged back to the nearest town (on foot) he thought "...man! I've lost my job this time for sure!".

Well - he didn't. He won a "safe driving commendation" because nobody got hurt!
