Primers?
 

I'm hoping to do some primer work over the Christmas holiday. I'll have two weeks off and the shop at work to work from.

I have a couple of questions regarding brands of paint and primers.

Have any of you used the Nason brand?

Do any of you have any experience with water bourne paints, good or bad?

From what I've read it's a level down from the premium paints, and produces good results. At one time it had a reputation for producing the blackest black available. Color matching may be more of a problem than with one of the premium paint lines, but this may or may not matter if you're doing a complete repaint.

From what I've read about water borne paints, they are still not very practical for home use. The problem is the drying technique which requires turbo dryers. Sounds reasonable in a down draft paint booth, but in a home garage you'd be likely to blow a ton of crud in the paint before it sets. Also it requires urethane clear coat as the final finish, so if the intent is to eliminate the dangerous chemicals for home painting, that isn't going to be accomplished.

I had heard the Nason line had a very good clear and their base coat was pretty good. I suppose their primers are ok as well.

Sounds like water borne is not the way for me!

Are you looking for an epoxy primer or a high build sandable primer?

epoxy is your base it will cure and this will keep any moisture out from the sandable and body fillers can trap. use that as your metal seal. epoxy will not help you much over original paint so don’t waist the money. upol makes some great spray fillers for sanding. then lay out a sandable primer on that sand to finish... if you use an epoxy that can be mixed as a sealer then lay that down. this will hide any burn through and prevent halo effect that that can cause.

If your going to bare metal nasons has a epoxy primer for 114.00 (here) and then get you a good urethane primer for the next step if your going to leave it in primer a while. If not get a good polyester primer like feather fill or slick sand they sand easily and build decent. I like nasons paint but prefer basf diamont clear or dupont chroma base it flows out well and lays smooth right out of the gun.

I've read their products are very high end, and big in Europe. They may be based out of Germany but I haven't been able to pin it down.

I recently used their 20:20 primer for flattening all the stone chips and dings in the tops of my rear fenders. I bought the roller kit at the following link:

I had to do some research to determine the mixing ratio since it's really designed to be sprayed. The nice part of the roller application (at least for my use) was the limited clean up and no need for masking/overspray since I was concentrating on a controlled area. The product works great. Goes on easily, dries quickly, very high build depending on how many coats are applied, and is relatively non-clogging during sanding (compared to lacquer primer). It's very tough stuff and required a lot of sanding, (because I put a lot on) although it blocked out beautifully and feathered invisibly with the surrounding surfaces.

I also tried some of their #5 primer for some small areas. It sprays nicely and levels well. It appears to be a high quality lacquer primer although this is never confirmed:

thats the stuff.. I love to roll it out. I do it with most of my spot repairs. you can roll upol I just dont mix it so thin... glad to see some one else knows about my best kept secret...I have used the hibuild stuff from nason.. hate it.. cures to fast even if you mis it less than spec.

ohhh and you can get upol in a rattle can.. still works great. also Sherwin Williams has some products too. but they can put anything in a rattle can.. even for cut in they can put any color in a can for cut in and small jobs.

shopline makes a good , fair priced product . it's under the PPG product line
