Water leaking into the cab
 

Hey all,

I picked up a 66 c10 a few months back and am starting to get around to working on it.

I have having a problem with water entering the cab during rain. I can see it dripping down the passenger side starting at the bottom of the dash and going down the kickpanel.

Doing some reading around here I am seeing a lot about the roof drip rail leaking. If that were the case, would it cause the water to come in right at the bottom of the dash?

Also had a question regarding the weight of the bed. Is this something that a single person could possibly hook a hoist too and move it back a foot for painting and then set back in place?

another thing i found on a 66 i used to own was under the glove box in the cowl panel where the cab is welded together there is some black sealer put into this area and when it gets bad it will drip in a heavy rain while being driven.this area is behind the glovebox and dash.it is under the panel where wiper motor bolts in just about underneath the passenger wiper.i have owned 2 or 3 of these trucks that drips in this area.if it has been dripping for along time when you look up under there you may find some rust out where the sheetmetal has been spot welded together at the factory.hope this helps.

Another tip, when I did mine I filled the sides and front of the gutter clear to the top. This way the way the water just runs off instead of sitting in a channel with no way to drain.

I used Evercoat self-leveling seam sealer and it worked great. The nice part is it can be applied with a standard caulking gun.

The water could also be coming in around your windshield rubber

Yes - per the attached data: excellent adhesion to factory E-coats, primer surfacers or OEM topcoats.

Great post with seam sealer...that's how these truck roofs rot out is the old sealer breaking out and water leaking in. I repaired my areas around the roof edge but I think I'll also fill my gutter up with sealer and as you mentioned..it's paintable.

It can leak around the windshield gasket, seam at base of windshield on either side at bottom just at rear of cowl, (firewall and post seam) side seam under the fender where the floor joins the kick panels and around vents.

The drip rail is the likely issue, however, you may have an issue with the rain coming in through the windshield cowl and running along the inner structure and into the cavity behind the vent assembly in the kick panel on the passenger side. Also, as mentioned above, you may also have an issue with the windshield grommet.

One thing you may check is the heater core...they are know to leak and drip into the underhood heater box and wick back into the cab through the firewall and into the underdash plenum box. Obviously, if it only happens when it rains, this may not be the source of the dripping.

Thanks for the replies. Turns out it is the drip rail. The old sealer is aged and cracked. I picked up some new seam sealer however directions call for it to be above 60 degrees during application. Might be awhile before that happens.

Now to see how this thing does in the snow :metal:

I found my leak at a seam under the vent cowl cover.

Funny thing, mine leaks at the same place due to a PO who popped a 1" hole in that area for the antenna. I removed the outer cowl and put some 300mph tape (for aircraft repair) over it. I didn't realize that there was another "layer" of sheetmetal under the fresh air duct that also has a hole in it. Wter still gets in there. From your pics, it looks to be quite a few spot welds that have to be drilled to get at that area. Looks like I will have to find a way to get at the hole from the inside to fix the leak. I also need seam sealer on the rails. PO didn't put any back when he painted the truck 25 yrs ago. Yes old thread but still good info. Thanks for the pic Lost!

There's about forty spot welds.
I wasn't looking forward to drilling all them out.
It went a lot easier than I expected.

I dug into mine yesterday.
