how in the world are these guys getting this?
i heard there was a paint with iron in it that rusts?

if it involves taking the spots you want down to bare metal and letting it naturally rust,how do you get it to bare metal?
a friend gave up trying with a flapper wheel on an angle grinder and then a wire wheel on a grinder then paint stripper.none of which worked.he never did finish.
any advice?im trying to do the hood,the cowl thing,parts of certain body parts.but this is trippin me out

its kinda hard to rust something in az. wait for a good monsoon, sand it to bare metal, and leave it out in the rain.

well i dont have access to a DA sander,so any other ideas?
the flap disk on a grinder only works on flat surfaces.

and this wet sanding isnt doing CRAP.it took me over an hour to get to bare metal in less then a 1 foot space.
still wondering if this wire wheel idea would work for me?

and wondering about this paint you can spray on and it rusts cause it has iron particles in it.

If you're just trying to get to bare metal, why not just use a rough grit paper to get rid of the paint? Or take a razor blade to it, and scrape it off. The only patina paint I've ever heard of it for arts and crafts.

You could use an aircraft stripping solvent. A lot of the patina jobs are 1) Actual panels that have been sun fried or surface rusted
or 2) just painted to look like rust but they aren't

wire wheel works, but if you can get ur hands on a da sander its faster because its less work and covers more of an area with it. took me nearly 2 hours to wire wheel my hood...da would have taken maybe 20 minutes. as for the paint, I've heard of it but never seen it. if its temporary just get it down bare metal, spray a water hose on it, or leave it outside. it will take a while to get it looking patina

and i was thinking of buyin some air craft stripper and see how that works.i heard you can literally watch it bubble the paint up?!

im having a problem getting passed the original white paint,and factory black primer.

i wanted to do certain spots down to bare metal and let the sucker rust for the old look.and rough up the rest thats not wherre the rust is,but make it look legit.
like a few trucks i have seen thats what they did.
i guess im not looking for exactly "patina" just the rusty beat out shop truck look.i

Here is an example of rust i made in just a few minutes... Depending on what you are looking for and how rusty you want it to look you can do this but be very careful.
Most guys that are recreating age will paint sand through in spots to bare metal don't use a flapper this is way harsh on the metal for a realistic appearance it will leave deep scratches use a jitter bug or da with 320 at the roughest.
the pictures are of a customers house i did steel inlays for the cabinet doors. i went to metal supply bought the steel cut it to size then pickled it with Muratic acid and water diluted 50/50 let it sit for about 10 minutes. then liberally used sea salt and iron (steel chop saw dust) or you can buy at art store same stuff in an etch a sketch sprinkle it on the panel and spray fine mist with hydrogen peroxide within about 15 seconds you will see an orange liquid form. keep misting and let dry its best to do this in the sun so it dries then make sure you neutralize with water but not too high pressure. once it dries it will be very nicely rusted. i coated the cabinets with wood wax and they have stayed perfectly.

another really good way to get through the paint is use a soaked piece of scotch brite the maroon colored one and lacquer thinner or paint reducer. this will eat through the paint and you have a very organic/natural look to the spots.

if you are painting new see if you can get a tinted primer like a rustoleum red oxide color. this will aid in being more natural looking.

FYI on my 67 the cab/doors were factory red oxide. the bed and front clip were black primed.
I did not patina it. this is the way i found it sitting

ya right now i found that using a stainless steel wool scrubber pad and cheap generic paint stripper it takes it RIGHT down to bare metal.

so now i just gotta do the work

I think theres a way to do it with acid. I know if you get aluminum brightening acid on laquer paint it will dull it really bad. just thought it might be worth some research
