my non-locking glove box latch came off just like the locking knob link above. The link about the non-locking knob removal is not the proper way on my '80 (maybe the earlier knobs were different?), even if you pop the chrome knob off of the front (which damages it and it never fits tightly again) it still won't come apart. You have to remove the cylinder to get the "nut" off. A large hex (Allen) wrench will make removal and re-installation easier, I don't remember the size at the moment.
Since I have a couple extra glove boxes laying around, I think I will do a write up on this very subject with pics.:ito:

I had to tighten the glove box latch/knob in my old 77 plow truck a while back and I took a pic that might be helpful. It's the non-locking type.

You have to flip the glovebox catch (labeled A) back into the closed position. Then stick a small screwdriver or similar tool into the access slot (labeled B) and depress the retainer tab on the knob/cylinder assembly (labeled C). That'll allow the knob/cylinder assembly to pull out without ripping off the chrome knob. If you don't flip the catch (A) back into the closed position, the retainer tab (C) won't be accessible through the slot (B).

Goes back together even easier. If I remember correctly, the knob/cylinder just pushes back into the catch and snaps into place.

The hardest part was tightening up the special retainer nut that holds the catch into the glovebox door. It has an oddball 8-sided opening. I think I ended up grinding down an old allen wrench or something to fit.
