Mystery Hose (at least to me)!
 

Hello Everyone,

I am a proud new member of this forum and a new owner of a great '72 Cheyenne that I acquired for dirt cheap. I am not great with engines but I'm trying to learn. I have some questions that I hope someone can answer. I have attached some photos of a hose that I found not attached. I have no idea where the loose end is suppose to attach to or what the end that is connected is attached to does. The last photo in the bottom left area has a cylinder that had an electrical type connection that was not attached. I attached it but I have no idea what it does. The truck was running great prior to me connecting it and has been running great after I connected it. It also has been running fine with the open hose.

Also, my windshield wipers work great but my windshield fluid components refuses to work. I can hear the fluid motor going when I push in on the windshield wiper button (if that's what I'm suppose to do to make it work) but no washer fluid gets sprayed (Yes, there is washer fluid in the tank!).

Finally, I'm trying to replace the locks on the doors. How the heck do you get the handles (door and window) off the side panels without breaking stuff?

That is the transmission controlled spark device. You can find more information on this thread mystery wires

Where several of us learned all about them... :lol:

Apparently a lot of us had this device disconnected on our trucks at some point in the past, and it is the consensus that it should remain so.

Question#
1. Dont know.
2. Replace the washer pump, it gets gummed up and the seals go bad, its cheap and not to hard to replace
3. There is a clip on the inside of the handles that has to be pushed off, they sell a special tool at most parts stores. Can post a pic of it if you like.

Any idea what the cylinder (and electrical connection) is above the 3 in my last picture?

That is part of the emissions in 1970's. What it does is hold the throttle open at idle when the engine is running. When you turn off the ignition the solenoid will allow the throttle plates to close all of the way.
If you check the tune up settings you will see two settings. One with the idle with the solenoid activated and one with it deactivated.

That is not what it does on my truck. On my original 72 Cheyenne Super, that solenoid is activated and increases the idle a little when the AC is on.

The first hose originally connected to the distributer to cut advanve in third gear or high gear to redue emissions, there are electral relays that are on the firewall and wires that run to trans, the solenoid and in to the fuse panel, it is not nessary and looks like the previous owner just hooked the vaccum advance straight to the carb, so in effect the unit is inoperable as it sits.

The solenoid on the carb is to speed up idle when air is on, also known as fast idle solenoid.

you can take the washer pump out and use petroleum jelly on the "o" rings to reestablish the seals and the pump should work again. Don't expect much as the spray is weak at best.

As said before the handles have clips that require a tool to remove- if you have experience a small screw driver will do it sometimes, but $5 for the right tool and the clips come right out,plus no torn door panels.
