Muffler Question
 

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a new muffler pretty soon. I have a 2.5" single pipe from the y-pipe to the tip out back. Right now I have a dynomax 2.5" in/out turbo.

I'm going to get one of those cherry bomb vortex mufflers on it. My question is, should I just get the 2.5" in/out muffler or should I get a 3" in/out on my 2.5" pipes.

Would that make a difference in the sound? I'm not getting a 3" tailpipe, it'll stay at 2.5" either way. The 3" and the 2.5" vortex mufflers both cost the same and have the same outer case dimensions.

I have heard of mufflers for a 2.5 system actually having less than 2.5" internals. I'm pretty sure either one would work good, but I'd like which ever would be deeper sounding, if it would make a difference at all.

i'd just go with the 2.5, i actually think (if im not mistaken) the 3" will hurt performance, not ridiculous, but, yea, you get the drift :lol:

note some mufflers 3" only are 2.5 inside anyway and the outside the muffler pipe is 3"
(seen this doing 3" on my buddies 1972 Skylark).....same muff diff size pipe

3" pipe actually improved my trucks performance ;) I went with 3" pipe all the way behind the "Y" new 3" cat and new Flowmaster 40 series 3" inlet and dual 2.5 outlet muffler dumped in front of the axle, this will give you deep and agressive sound as well as tripping car alarms in the parking lot :metal:

lol my 2.25 piping and 40s mufflers do that in the parking lot at school lol its sooo funny:lol:

its even better when it sets off one of the big lifted trucks alarm:metal:

yea, but he's saying just a 3 inch muffer, not all the piping, i was always told from the drag racing people(buncha old car guys my dad hangs with :lol:) if your gunna use 3 inch muffler, use 3 inch pipe, for better performance, but i guess it really only matters if your a serious racer :lol:

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I always just get the muffler the same size of the pipe, but I had been reading on mufflers and some people like to do this, and some don't. Guess I'll just stick with the 2.5, as it'll cost less to install if he doesn't have to swedge the pipes out to fit. Thanks guys!
