Gas tank relocation revisited -
 

This has been covered a thousand times, but we need a comprehensive thread that includes PICTURES of your conversion, including info on the tank you used, and where you ended up running the filler to. Right now, I am partial to running the filler to the side of the bed, and putting in a filler door from another vehicle, but I want to see them from the bed and any other locations. I warn you, if I don't get responses, I will be annoying and bump this thread until I do - I just spent a half hour doing an advanced google search for gas tank relocation on this site, and there's only fragments here and there. We need it all RIGHT HERE. Let's put together something everybody can use. So let's see 'em!

Good idea to put all the tank info on one thread. John do you have any more pics of the filler as it's run on the bed itself. Truck looks nice.

Here's a few of the options available from some of the vendors. If you are a vendor, please feel free to add to this thread. #1 is Brother's, #2 is Classic Industries, #3 and #4 are ECC, and #5 is GMC Paul's.

Here's a bit of good advice that Wes (of Classic Heartbeats) had in an old thread:

"Poly or steel, it is up to you. However the poly tank is a lot tougher than the steel tank. Polyethylene tanks are produced from extreemly tough cross linked polyethylene. Polyethylene by itself is impervious to everything but fire. Even battery acid doesn't penetrate it and Cross linked Polyethylene is extreemly impact resistant!! MTS (The poly tank manufacturer) makes the tanks to twice as thick as DOT requires them to be, so believe me when I say it can take a big impact without rupturing. The hottest heat of the Desert South can not warp it. (Unless it hit more than 400 degrees or hotter!!) Anyone who has warped a tank, either didn't have it vented correctly and it only warped temperately while under suction pressure, or parked it over a fire. Most of your new cars all have poly tanks now and they are holding up just fine. Actually they hold up better than steel, because they do not rust!! They do not have a protective liner inside because they do not need one. Unlike steel to keep it from rusting.. Do what you want, but my vote gets poly!! (And I do sell both) WES"

Figured this info is pertinent as well...Since once you relocate the tanks you have to figure how to access them to fill....there are several options. I am going to use the John Fabris Stake pocket gas fill mod. I was going to do the sidemarker light mod, but was worried as the nozzles have larger and larger rubber vapor catchers around them that eventually I'd have to fill up w/ a 5 gallon gas can ;) Put pictures of the four main types of fills for others information...and I considered each of these at some point.

Here's a couple of pictures of my '70 longbed 3/4 ton, and the way the PO did the gas tank. I like coming out the side of the bed, it looks more stock to me. I don't know what kind of tank it is, it looks like something welded up by a local shop to me. But you can't see it from the back, and I have a sport bumper on the truck.

Here's a picture of inside the bed. You can't really do this with a wood bed.

The tank seems to be the easy part. The tough part looks to be a satisfactory fuel neck install.

I know this is an older thread, but I'm looking for a little help and maybe some ideas. I got my 70 c10 a few months back and working on it, one step at a time. The PO relocated the gas tank under the bed, and I believe the tank is from LMC. I plan on lowering the truck, 5'' up front and 6'' in the rear, but my concern is the tank is sitting too low under the bed, and I might scrape the ground with it! What other options do I have in regards to a replacement tank, or can I work with this one? I read a post here of some one using a 64-68 mustang tank, and wondered if it could work for the 70 c10? I don't know if its just that the PO just didn't mount correctly, or its just a tank for a stock mount location. It was lowered a bit in the back with a one inch block. Anyway any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated..

I did the LMC tank kit on a 71. I know which line is pickup tube. My question is where do the other lines go. There is one on the fill side which I assume is a vent. Then there are 2 on the opposite end. Is one a return and one vapor? If so does it matter which goes where? I went with marker light fill which looks great so far. now to run lines. I plan on running new steel line along most of chassis, what are yall using for the steel. I was going to use high end brake line.

I've never seen the behind the taillight filler idea, very cool :)

For those who installed the '69 Camaro style tank (with filler behind license plate) Does the fuel have a tendency to 'slosh' out the filler neck when you step on the gas? I'm most likely going to relocate the tank, and the behind the plate idea was my plan for the filler, but I always wondered about the gas coming out... ?

The rear filler won't barf out fuel on acceleration, but it will when you fill it. My Caddy does it if I have the filler set on anything but the slowest "click".

On my truck, I'm going with the side marker fill and will be making a tank.

We went with the '69 Camaro tank and matching sending unit. The fuel gauge works perfectly using the original brown sending wire in the truck.

We used 2" x 1.5" steel tubing cut to fit as shown in the photos and bolted to factory cross braces. After mocking up the tank with the tubing in place, we drilled holes for the factory '69 Camaro tank straps and bolted them up.

Then we opened up the tag bracket to get access to the tank and finished it off with a fold down license plate bracket from a '79 Monte Carlo.

As said, it doesn't spill out under acceleration but you just have to be careful about over filling it when getting gas.

Oh, and it doesn't hang down too far because of the angle at the rear of the tank.
