If you are talking about a 400 SBC based engine, be sure to have plenty of radiator. They require about the same cooling as a big block.

I am currently having one built. One of my buddies I work with is doing all of the work. I initially considered stroking the motor to 415 or 421 but I decided against it. Now I am going for internally balanced w/ 6" rods 10.5-11.0 to 1 CR and aluminum heads. It will be going in my 72 4x4.

406 efi?......I thought about doing it with my 88 tbi Sub......found getting a tbi to work properly with a big power engine is a bit of a crapshoot.....and the aftermarket efi systems are pretty pricey(2Gs and up)......eventually I sold the whole truck and bought a carbed '85 that I can drop in a big power carb 406 in (smog) legally.

You'll like it well enough. Mine stays around 170 with new stock replacement radiator.

I was all over "other" induction systems. If you're not doing the work yourself, pick the system that your mechanic knows best.

Welcome to the board-

I'm building one too. I just need to put it together and get it dyno'ed.

Trick flow heads 2.100/1.6
Custom JE pistons to match heads
6.0 Eagle rods.
Stock stroke compstar crank
Isky solid roller
CC pro magnum 1.6 rockers
750 proform carb

Engine was going in a '78 Malibu but I'm consolidating my projects so the truck stays and gets the poweplant.

Jeez Autometer, what's the compression with those pistons and heads? Those combustion chambers look like 58s.

I built a 406 for my 71 nova this past spring, and it made 540hp at the crank, I ran it hard all summer long and the temp never got over 180 degrees even during the break in. Good luck with your build.

Guessing on the piston CCs it came out to 12.75:1 but I haven't built it so I really don't know. The heads used to be 67 out of the box but they've been opened up and resurfaced a couple times in it's life time.
