Re: 3.07 gears????

my question is why is there no 3.07 gear set but a 3.08 ? why was it called a 3.08 set instead of 3.07? if it works out to be 3.07

Re: 3.07 gears????

hmm thats odd. i know they count out to almost exactly 3.07 not sure why the factory called em 3.08. the math dont work. you have stock gears

Re: 3.07 gears????

My old '74 heavy 1/2ton had 3:07 gears in a 12 bolt rear end. Still got the axle out back buried under a tarp/snow&ice.

Re: 3.07 gears????

maby 3.08 where only in 10bolt rearends,and 3.07 in 12bolts

Re: 3.07 gears????

i think the 3.07 in 12 bolts and 3.08s in 10 bolts is a good guess!

Not correct though. My 77 Cheyenne has a 12 bolt with 3.08 gears from the factory.

Re: 3.07 gears????

the tooth count will still be 43/14 which mathematically is 3.07 regardless what the sticker says

Re: 3.07 gears????

I was always under the impression that it was 3.07 = Truck, and 3.08 = Car

Re: 3.07 gears????

Maybe it's just a matter of what rolls off the tongue better ?

Maybe the small number differences was used to help differentiate between car and truck, or 10 and 12 bolt gears, but the system was later dropped ?

For 70's trucks I've seen 3.07, 3.40, and 4.10 printed in a sales brochure. My glove box sticker says 3.40.

that is what mine counted 43/14 i went to buy it because the guy told me it was 3.73 i counted it and it was 43/14 he gave the rear end to me!!!
ALSO is there a differance between the 2WD-4WD rear ends ive read the axles where interchanged ?????

Re: 3.07 gears????

This made me curious since my K10 has 3.08 gears in it. Looking at the aftermarket parts available, 3.08 is what you will find in the rear 10/12 bolt (40/13 tooth count) and the dana 44 front will have the 3.07 (43/14). The true difference in ratio is only 0.0055. If folks are counting 43/14 in their rear end I'd say they have 3.07 gears from the factory, but only 3.08 are available from the aftermarket now? (summit and randy's R&P)

Re: 3.07 gears????

I picked up a 12 bolt from a '77 truck to go in my '87 and the axle code shows it has 3.07s

They had both in the car 12-bolt so they probably did the same thing in the truck. A 3.07 gear is on a 2-series carrier and the 3.08 is on a 3-series carrier in the car 12-bolt so probably the same in the truck version.

Don't ask me why they did that but they did.

If is is a 2-series carrier like I think it is then you will need a different carrier too. If they break it down like the car 12-bolt carriers you will need a 3-series for 3.73's and a 4-series for 4.10's unless you run special thick gears on a 3-series carrier then you can get 4.10's on the 3-series. Can't get 3.73's on a 4-series carrier.

Re: 3.07 gears????

What does it cost to switch gears in a 4x4 95 Tahoe. I would like to go from a 3.73 to a 3.42 or 3.07.
I've never messed with differentials. Is this best left to an exper? Any good shops for this near Illiana?

understand !!12 bolts are alot of hassle compared to a 9" i think i might start looking for a nine inch thats been narrowed down too around an s10 width for my future 4 bar set up i just wanna run lower gears till then!! these diesel gears are terrible
