Rear axle set up
 

Wasn't too sure where to put this post but I just had a quick question. A guy at work wants me to set up and weld perches on a new axle he just got. He said he would rather pay me to do it rather than a shop. I figure I will need to cut the old perches off and weld on new ones. What do you guys think I should charge him.

If it were me I would make him help and bring beer and lunch. That would be my "charge" :metal:

all depends on how good of a welder you and have how good you know him.

i just did this to a rear diff. it took a lot of time to grind off all of those brackets and welds ! id charge him a coupple hundred atleast ! maybe 300 ... if he isnt a good friend

Thanks guys. I still haven't quite decided yet. He has a sweet car trailer I'm in need of. So maybe I'll charge him a hundered and a few uses of his trailer. I work with him I don't know him that well.

I agree with tomtuna1978. My time is very valuable to me. I just did the same thing and I would say I had probably 5 hours in it and heres why.

1. Cutting the old brackets off without cutting the attached axle housing is impossible. In addition to grinding down the pieces still atched to the houding after cutting the big pieces off you have to fill in the cut housing and grind them down which is extremely time consuming. Not to mention those flap disk sanding wheels run about $8 a piece.
2. Now you have to weld the new brackets on. This is harder than what someone might think. The trick is to put them back on at the same distance from the end as the old one as well as ensure the pinion angle is the same agle. To do this you'll need to invest in a magnetic angle finder if you don't have one already. If you don't get you angle right you will be chasing drive line alignments issues down the road.
