How to tell if truck is 1/2, 3/4 or 1 Ton??

So me and my brother have always been under the impression the truck is a 3/4 ton, but we are trying to make 100% sure it is, since we are ordering parts for it... Any pointers of how to know size for sure?

For instance, it is a 8 lug.

Got a serial number?

If it's all original - 8 lugs means its at least a 3/4 ton

Got a pic?

Model number helps. A GMC 3/4-ton is a 150, and GMC 1-ton would be a 250. Wheelbase is another clue. A 3/4-ton will be 125 while a 1-ton is 137. I've rashly assumed you're referring to the GMC in your signature....

I take it that you are talking about the 1951 GMC that is listed in your signature.

Six lug wheels indicate 1/2 ton, eight lug usually mean 3/4 ton and one tons usually have larger heavy duty rims. One ton pickups with a box had the 9-1/2 or so foot beds and most ran flat beds with dual rear wheels.

Here is a link to another website that has some info that you might be able to use http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/index.html It looks like an interesting site for anyone with an AD GMC truck.

It's not a long bed, and it's 8 lug, so we're right then, 3/4 Ton.. Thanks guys :D

While we're at it, since wheels are away, anyone know what pattern the 8 lug is?

they did make short wheel base 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. special order and kinda rare. I cant speak for the 50s but in the early 60's they were certainly available. Cab only,no bed I 'm not sure what year your seeking info on but half ton trucks are 6 lug, 3/4 ton are 8 lug. 1 ton are also 8 lug but the frame is different. Behind the cab the 1 tones are streight back while th 3/4 ton arch over the rear axles like the half tons.

Looking at the picture, it is a long bed... That's a cap off of a 8' long bed 86 Silverado.

So it's 8' long, and I'll get the serial number asap

My money's on 3/4 ton. IIRC, 1 tons had a 9' bed...

I've seen reference to a short GMC 1-ton in the '47 to '54 time frame but have never seen even a picture of one.

GMC also made 1/2-tons with the longer box like a Chevy 3/4-ton.
