Help - Where to have air compressor motor rebuilt

Unfortunately my 80 gallon Porter Cable Dayton 7.5hp motor died yesterday. Looking for help finding a reputable small motor rebuilder who who has reasonable prices that can turn something like this around fairly quick.
Any help is appreciated. |

Are you referring to the compressor head or the electric motor that powers the compressor head? In most of todays home type compressors they are throw away if they have sustained any cylinder damage so in most cases you will end up buying at least a new compressor head if that is the case I would strongly recommend buying a cast iron cylinder two stage compressor unit look at Grainger and or McMaster-Carr for industrial rated electric motors and compressor heads the right air compressor with proper maintenance interval will last a very long time I have an air compressor I,ve had for close to 20 years it ran my body shop for many years and still provides all the service I need in my scaled down home based shop.As a side note in these tough times you could very likely find a shop closing its doors and pick up a good deal on one check Craigs list Ive seen just about any type of equipment a guy could want from lifts to front end alignment and all in between. Good luck with what ever direction you decide to go.

northerntool.com has new motors, but as stated in your build thread i'd start with a local electrical shop and search for a rebuilt one... or spend $300-$600 for a new one..
7.5 HP seems a bit large for that size though.. for this price you are half way to an entire new compressor! I'd look for a good rebuilt or used.. if not then sell yours and spend the money on a new setup http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...1914_200381914 |

i'd b checking the electric supply and connections as well as the start system before pronouncing the motor dead

ARe you positive its bad?
We are fortunate that we have a lot of places here in Houston. I would see if you can blow some air through it. ( i Know its hard without a compressor) take it off and borrow someones to clean it out good. works somtimes cause of all the crap that gets inside if located inside a shop. You can check the stator for shorts and grounds. Go online and their is a lot of good info how. Just need an Ohm meter. If bad your screwed. I have rewound my own motors when I did not have money and it is a pain. check the commutator run out. and if bad you may just have to replace it w/o doing the whole motor. |

Thanks for the feedback. I forgot to mention the reason I was looking for recommedations was I will be on business travel for a week so I can't get my electric motor - not the pump - to a local shop. I thought about packing it up and having my wife mail it out for me so it could be available soon after I return.

I'd pull it off, put it in her trunk and have her drop it off at the elctrical shop that someone posted... they will pull it out of the truck for her.

mbgmike - Not sure why you think it looks small but my compressor is a monster. It may not look like a 7.5HP motor to you but it is unless someone put the factory tag from another motor on this one.
I found a near new replacement for about $300. I may go with that. |
