383/ 350/ 205/ 33" tires with 411's

Does anyone have this settup?
Do you like how it runs? and would you reccomend for driving around town and freeway? What do you think would be the best gearing for this application.
Thanks!

Re: 383/ 350/ 205/ 33" tires with 411's

I have a 383/350/205 with 35 inch tires and 411's.

It's ok in town and speeds at 55-60 even 65 but at that speed I'm turning right at 3500 rpms....so I don't do it too long.

Great low end torque, lots of power...but I sure miss my kick down and my 4 speed.

If I had it to do over....and I probably will....I'd go with a 4 speed so it's more suited for highway.

But...cruising locally, up and down the mountains.....works perfectly and that is mainly what I'll be doing anyway.

33's might be a little different, but probably not much....there is only 1" difference in tire height.

Agreed. I had a 350/350/205 with 33's and 4.10's. It made me not want to drive above 60 cause the motor was just spinning so fast. aside from that it was pretty nice.

I ran that combo and when driving on the interstate @ 65mph, would turn right at 3K.

Concensus on the board over the years has always been the best combo for a three speed tranny & 4:11's was to run 35" tires.

IMO for a driver, over-drive is your friend. ;)

Here's a decent gear chart if you want to run the numbers:

I have a 454 4-speed/205 35s with 4.10s, and its about perfect I think for all around driving. Highway is a bit much for extended trips, but 10-15 minute blasts are fine. I can still creep in 1st and in low range, don't even need brakes down steep hills, gotta love a 4-speed!!!

Don't want to hijack the thread, but....

VT, is there an overdrive option for the 350/205 combo?

I checked the grimjeeper and my results are different.

At 65 I'm turning right at 3500 rpms.

Maybe my tach is off.....my speedo is right on per GPS.

Due to the 6.58:1 - 1st gear.
Which puts you around 53:1 in crawl.

However, if a guy were to run a basic later model auto w/OD, he could get down to 68:1 "and" have a 30% over-drive gear for the highway.
Auto@ crawl: 700r/241 w/4.10's comes out to roughly 68:1

...or my tach and/or the math.

I checked mine with my wrist watch going down the highway between mile markers.

Either way, I'm with you...the gears are to low for long trips.

33/12.50-16.5s with 350/350 and 4.10 gears -- good for all-around and OK on two-lanes (55 to 60 mph), but could use another gear at freeway speeds.

Re: 383/ 350/ 205/ 33" tires with 411's

This is what happend. I was going to do 383/350/205/with 36" tires originally. Well as time has passed ive chaged my mind and now I want to run 33" tires instead. I already have the 36" tires and 411 gears on my rolling chass. But all I want is to be happy with my ride. I didnt want to have to buy new front and rear gears with posi. I guess what I'll do is get it running and decide then. If i have to I'll sell my gears and use that money to get whatever gears is best for 33". The 36" tires are going bye bye for now. I'll keep the gears and see how they work out.
Thanks guys!!!

$$$$$$$$$

When i got my truck it had a 383/350/205 combo, only my truck has 3.73s. It was awesome around town but at 65 even with 3.73s i was at 3200 rpm. But you get to see the looks on peoples faces when your old truck destroys their riced out honda at the traffic light :metal: i still have the same setup, but with a 350. I've looked into getting a gear vendors unit, but they're like 2 grand. Plus you'd need custom driveshafts.

Re: 383/ 350/ 205/ 33" tires with 411's

In my 86 k5 I have a 350/350/208 with 36's and 4.11's and I turn close to 3k at cruising speed (65-70). I would think that with 33's you would be turning too many rpms to cruise comfortably. I had a 700r4 before the th350 and in od it felt like it was lugging until you hit about 75. But it seemed perfect with my old 35 inch bfg mud terrains. All this being said I plan on getting some 37's to have to drive around town and cruise with, but keep my 36 inch swampers to go play in the mud with.

Re: 383/ 350/ 205/ 33" tires with 411's

What RPM should you be @ doing 65 MPH? When I first fot my Blazer it had 350/350/205 and I put some 31" tires. It cruised very well in town and on freeway. If Im not mistaken it had the OE 3.73's. Should I expect it to run about the same with 33's and 411's.
Thanks.
