removing grille trim...and side emblems
 

ok, im almost done primering my truck... just have 1/3 of the front fenders, the wiper cowl and the front 3" of the hood.. while i am there though i would like to take off the old trim and replace with what i recieved from rcdvl, i am not sure how to remove it.. also how to remove the emblems, i have one that is riveted on :rolleyes: but the other one seems glued or double sided tape... ?

If I remember correctly, the long pieces on the top and bottom just have a thin metal nut that you can get pliers or a rachet on. The vertical pieces on the side are plastic and you have to pinch the back and push them out. Just take the grill out and look at them from the back. This is how I had to do it on my 87.
My emblems were the same, the 'riveted' one had the same thin metal nuts on the back, I just carefully pried it off. Same with the glued one, except I used a razor to get it off. If your emblem is truly riveted on, and your inner fenders are like mine, there is an access panel held in place by three bolts that should allow you to get to the back of the emblem.

The grill molding has little "pegs" that come off the molding and travel through the metal of the truck. On the other side of the metal a speacial nut is used to thread itself onto this peg. Some pegs may be plastic and some may be steel. Either are easy to break if you over tighten, or it they are old. The special nut is self tapping, so it creates its own threads on the peg, when its first installed. You should be able to remove the bottom grill molding from under the truck, the side moldings, through the headlight spot, and the top molding (well I cant remember the top molding, but its pretty obvisious when you look at it). I never took off any badges yet so I dont know about that. Dont forget to post some pictures when your done with the primer.

A flatblade screwdriver will take the side emblems off. It will probably break the the mounting tabs off, though. It did on mine. However, I left them off and filled the holes. If you want to reinstall the moldings later, you can glue them back on with 3M emblem adhesive.

casey, more than likely i will just pop them off like that, well atleast one, the other i have to drill out the rivets, i am just worried about breaking the emblem......

Both mine were held on with the original fasteners, and both popped off with no damage to the emblems, other than broken mounting tabs.
