two bbl carb replacement
 

Looks like my old rochester is never coming back from the re-builder . Does Holley or Edelbrock make a good replacement carb for a '69 307 ? Guess I'd have to go with a manual choke . Any tips ? THANKS !

I've had pretty good luck with edelbrock carbs. Without knowing anything about your motor, i would consider a 500 or 600 cfm & electric choke is just a matter of one hot wire. Aluminum 4 bbl. Intakes are cheap for small blocks. Aluminum intake,carb. & hei & dual exhaust (even better with headers) will wake your little small block right up. Hope this helps ya. ;) john

I don't have much 2 bbl. Experiance, but i'd call edelbrock or hollys (whatever you prefer) tech. Line. They will supply you with the facts & figures.

my 72 burb has a the original 74,000 mile 307 motor in it with the 2 barrel rochester. i rebuilt the carb and it still isn't quite right yet AND boring. only mods are new plugs, wires, a petronix electronic igntion conversion in the stock distributor, and mobil 1 10w-30 high mileage oil.

i purchased a new 4 row radiator and all the bracketry and planning to do an intake install at the same time since the cooling system will be apart.

parts so far:

Edelbrock performer intake (idle - 5500rpm range)
rochester 750 Q-jet from my dad's '84 350cid burb

parts to get:

Edelbrock q-jet rebuild kit, phenolic float, and hi-po accelerator pump

the carb will eventually go back on the 406sbc we had briefly in my dad's 84 burb when i get to the engine swap on my 72 burb, but for this summer the 307 will be towing the family camper and i want as much performance as i can get without tearing into the engine.

figure the q-jet will give me better low end response (torque), improved fuel economy and another 15-20hp at wide open throttle when the huge secondaries open up.

i prefer the characteristics of the spread bore carbs over square bore. edelbrock reportedly markets q-jet style knockoffs up to 750cfm. i hear a mild 350 will not use over 600, but when towing or in high altitude i'm sure the reserve capacity is handy. that 406 never had trouble and we kept the carb just as it came off the original 350.

IT SEEMS AS THOUGH ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE THE MISCOMSEPTION THAT MORE FUEL IS ALWAYS BETTER. IT'S NOT. IN ORDER FOR FUEL TO DO ANYTHING TO MAKE HORSEPOWER IT HAS TO BE BURNED. IT HAS TO BE DELIVERED TO THE PISTONS MIXED WITH AIR. THAT THE CARBS JOB. NOW TO GET INTO THE CYLINDERS THE INTAKE VALVE OPENS & LETS THE MIX INTO IT TO BE BURNED. ONLY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MIX IS GOING TO ENTER WHILE THAT VALVE IS OPEN & IT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE LENGTH OF TIME IT'S OPEN, SIZE, LIFT OF THE VALVE. THE AREA,THATS THE CAMSHAFTS JOB. NATURELY THE BIGGER THE CUMBUSTION CHAMBER, THE MORE FUEL YOU CAN BURN... BUT YOU HAVE TO GET IT THERE. EXESS FUEL WILL BE WASTED & YOUR TRUCK WILL ALWAYS RUN RICH. 750 CFM IS NOT TOO BIG FOR A 350 PROVIDING YOU CAN GET THE MIX IN & EXHAUST GASSES OUT. try seeing what NAPA wants for a rebuilt unit the local parts store should b able to get you one in just a few days

Never heard anything good about re-built carbs from parts stores . Any experience with NAPA carbs ? Already paid for one re-built carb that the builder can't make work . THANKS !

i never have either & i've never succesfully done it either.;) now my 80 bb 1 ton has a rebuilt quadrajet on & it & it works great. But if was put on by the p.o. . There are carb. Specialist shops out there that spcialize in quadrajets. Google it. They aughta know what they are doing & seems like it would have to be cheaper?? John

this make's a couple of post's complaining about sending these two barrell rochester's to someone and having bad luck ??? no way I would send one of those ANYWHERE just rebuild it yourself ,,
these carburetor's are AS BASIC AS IT GET'S ,,,,,,that insurance phrase come's to mind ,, A CAVE MAN COULD DO IT !!!!!!!!!!

all it take's is some good quality cleaner/degreaser and a $15 kit from napa ! THATS IT !

as far as you saying that your whole carb is gone those are on ebay all the time ,,,,,,
I'm sure that plenty of guy's on here have some to sell they used that same carburetor on 283's 307's 327's FOR YEAR'S !

since you don't have one here is a couple on ebay rightnow (NOT MINE BTW)
BUT MY ADVICE is even so that these say REBUILT don't trust that it's sort of like buying a engine from a guy that say's ITS REBUILT AND RUNS GOOD ! don't waste your time installing one of these carb's without going to napa spending $15 buck's and get it right ! much more enjoyable !

Holley 2300 series 2 barrel carbs are good carbs. They come in either 350cfm or 500cfm. But... get your wallet out. For the price of a new 2 barrel like this you can get a 4 barrel.

Another avenue is to hit the junk yards for a used Rochester 2 barrel in decent shape, and rebuild it yourself. EZPZ... :)

my 307/2bbl combo is so out of whack from the PO trying to rebuild it themselves. Instead of messing with it I'm going to replace it with a new intake and 4bbl.

So that means my 2bbl will be for sale shortly if you are interested. But you would have to rebuild it again to get the settings right.

1) i don't know if you have Advance or Autozone in SC, but i got a reman 2GC from Champion for about $150 that works ok so far.

2) As pointed out above, i just got a 2GC from ebay for $5.50. It may need a rebuild, but i got mainly for learning purposes. But even so, a rebuild is not that difficult on these carbs. These guys can walk you thru it step-by-step (while i watch.) i think the haynes rochester book also can walk your thru it.

3) Speaking of holley, they have reman units of the 2GC available for about $215 with no core charge at Summit. If i had known about these, i would have bought one instead of at the parts store.

So, that's my opinion and the way i did was to just get a reman; i didn't rebuild mine at the time because the actual airhorn got bent in a garage accident.

But by staying with rochester, this way you don't have to fiddle with the choke, not that manual chokes are bad.

I've re-built this carb once or twice quite a few years ago . Sent it to an expert mostly because after 230,000 miles I thought it deserved it . As I've said before it came back twice and ran for a bit before the acell pump came apart and jammed the throttle . THANKS to this board I asked the builder if he could try an Echlin kit . He just e-mailed and said the Echlin pump looked good and my carb's on the way . THANKS to those on this board with helpful comments .
