"Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
So..... which one is it officially? Or is neither one an official GM nickname? I have always refereed to these as square body's, but it seems every semi-official description of the 73-91 series refers to them as the "rounded line".

I've never heard of a GM sanctioned nickname for either bodystyle.

Re: "Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
the way i understood it the 73-87 was the square body and the 67-72 was the rounded line even tho it wasnt that drastic of a difference between the two

Re: "Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
How about "red headed stepchild of GM trucks"?

Re: "Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
The terms go back a few years. I can remember several years ago the 73-80 trucks were described as "Rounded Line" trucks due to the rounded fender lines. The later 81-87 were considered "Square bodies" to reflect the changes in body line and headlights.
Fast forward to the days the magazines started talking about our generation of trucks. For what ever reason they adopted the Square Body moniker, and the rest is history. There are a few of us old hold outs that occasionally use the rounded line term. Since the square body definition has become so common, most folks don't understand what we are referring to. |
Re: "Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
From what i remember reading years ago it's officially the known as the "round line" by GM and that was due to the fact that the door and bed side panels were rounded due to the curvature of the door windows as oppose to the 67-72 generation flat windows and relatively flat door and bed side panels.
IMO Everyone calls them the "Square body" mostly due to the front cap being and looking so square. It's hip 2 be suqare!:metal: |
Re: "Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
Thanks all! I have heard both, but always refereed to them as a square body myself, even though I've owned two 73-80's and two 81-87's.

Re: "Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
I always thought that GM refered to them as "rounded line" trucks... I call 'em square bodies.

Re: "Square Body" or "Rounded Line"
I called them 73-87 trucks. I didn't realize the square body moniker until I started reading it on here. It seems to fit the best from 73-87. The 69-72 trucks seem to be more rounded to me. Just my .02
