Got a new idea! DUALLY?????
Well I have been working on a 1971 3/4 4x4 for the past few years and was origionally going to put 8" springs and a 2" body lift on it and a set of 38's or 40's but my needs have changed and I really need a truck that I can work with. So the new idea is to leave the 8" springs and put on an original 1972 Chevy flatbed that I recently came across. For wheels and tires I am thinking about american eagle bullet holes, series 058, putting 17x8's up front and then the 17 inch dually rears with a set of 37x12.50's all the way arround. I would like to see a few pics if you guys have any of 67-72 4x4 duallys!

Gm didn't make a 67-72 4x4 dually, but there are planty of people that have made these 67-72's into 4x4 duallys. If you use the 72 bed, you will probably want to use the 72 rear too. 73 and later rears are wider. The 67-72 dually rears tuck just inside the lines of the truck. You can actually run a stock fleetside bed if you minitub it. Of course if you are working it a lot, the flatbed may make more sense.

Here's my buddy's 70 C30 converted to 4wd. I could swear he said the dually axle came from like a 71 or 72 - is it correct no factory dually trucks for 67-72?

Thanks for the input guys. Yes the truck was not an original dually truck it was originally a fleet side long bed 3/4 4x4 with a 292 inline 6, 4 speed and a 205 transfercase and came with factory 4.56 gears. I have replaced the rear with a 14 bolt from a later model. I am going to be running a factory 72 model flat bed from a C-30 2wd. A guy is giving me the flat bed so I figured I would just run it as is for now. I am not running the dually style wheels on the front, they will be 17X8 Eagle Alloye 058's. Only the rear will be Duall. Yes Special K it is just a new idea for my truck. Hopefully I can post some pics soon. I am trying to finish my new shop and get every thing moved into it. The`73-up C&C (cab & chassis) rear was the same as the pre-73 in width.Then came out the Big Dooley dual wheel pickup with a wider rear that allowed for a normal pickup width between the inner tires.The C&C rears require tubbing the wheelhouses amd leaves less than 4' between.The original post is quite easy to for all to understand and I have no reason to doubt that.

I think were talking about two totally different rears here. I'm not sure on the particulars of those two trucks but I would say the blue Longhorn was a Cab & Chassis truck and the bed was added. The red truck is probably using the 73 up Dana 70 pickup style rear axle...these were used on the dually pickups that ran a stock style bed with the large fiberglass factory added fenders. These trucks were generally used for pulling trailers and overhead campers where the extra width gave a lot more stability. Cab & Chassis trucks were still available from 73 up and they got the new 14 bolt rear which is the same width as the C&C Eaton...which was what I was referring to.

Amullis, getting back to your build, I like the way you think..I'm in the process of doing the same thing. This truck is being dismantled in the next few weeks and giving up its complete drivetrain to go under a C/30.

Maybee you can give me some input. How do you like the wheels that you have on your truck and how do those tires ride? I have recently found a set of factory 8 lug steel 19.5" wheels in a junk yard near my parents house. I know that guy that owns the yard pretty well and he said that he would hold them for me for a week or so. He wants $50.00 per wheel. $300.00 for the set did not sound too bad but I am not sure that they are what I want. |

Thats a really good price on 19.5s and I would jump on them if I were you..about the only drawback is not a very big selection of tires in the traction series..and a good tire can run upwards of 300 bucks. Mine are 8r Cooper C-140 drive [traction] 12 ply and I'm using Equal to balance them. they measure about 35" tall. If your wanting a tall tire on your dually rear you may want to think about something like a Q-78 Buckshot Mudder in a 16"x6" wheel, I believe thats about as big as you can go. |

I am actually planning on running a 37" tall tire I have seen some on the cummins forum and they look great. I also went over to the guys house to look at the oringial flat bed and man is that thing in great shape. The wood strips need replacing but metal wise it looks great. I do think that I will shorten it a bit though. It is 12" long and I am not sure that I want 4" of bed hanging off the rear of my truck. I will probably shorten to somewhere between 8 and 10 feet. |
