67-68 Steering Wheel HELP
 

Just was wondering if the stock 67-68 steering wheel came w/ a spring inside the wheel underneath the metal cup thing.??? :lol:

And the plastic ring on the inside of the cup that runs between each screw and acts as a "spacer" has snapped between 2 of the 3 screws.. does this affect the horn??

Reason why i'm asking is that i picked this wheel up at a swap meet for $5 :metal: and the horn cap was still attached to the wheel but was wobbling and loose...spring?

Also, any pics of the steering wheel took apart or the wheel w/ the cap off?

TTT...as I am also interested...also picked up a 67 wheel for $5 at a swap meet with no horn button wanted to install it on my truck. www.truckandcarshop.com sells a kit for $18...I wonder if this is all you need...

Do you have a copy of the LMC catalog? It's all illustrated in "exploded" diagrams. The catalog is free. Yes there's a spring between the horn button bushing and the horn button cup. LMC sells a kit with those 3 parts, plus 3 screws and a horn contact kit for $25. P/N 34-0430. They don't support this board, so they're not popular here.
If the horn button is wobbly, it could be the rubber horn bushing that's bonded to the metal horn cap. Sometimes they got torn or fall apart after only 43 years. I've seen that rubber piece for sale somewhere, but I can't remember where. I patched the one on my '68 back together with RTV silicone gasket stuff. [EDIT: Car and Truck Shop has the rubber ring]

Here is a thread where I posted a picture of the horn parts and an explanation of how they are installed...

If the parts aren't put together right the button will be loose. The picture of the horn parts in the LMC catalog is incorrect in how the parts go into the wheel so don't go by it.

Good catch!
I believe their proper sequence is:
Wheel, Steering column nut, spring, horn button cup, plastic horn button bushing, 3 screws, horn cap. Reconnect horn relay.
I'll go outside and check it out, just so I'm not a liar.

OK. I was right. Although it's debatable on whether you need to put on the steering column nut first, or last. I sometimes have also used a 1/2" lock washer under the nut, and even once or twice a 1/2" i.d. nylon washer as an insulator to keep the horn from shorting and honking unnecessarily.
As far as the spring orientation, it's either concave or convex -- forgot which. I always put a small "X" in Sharpie ink on the side of the spring that was up when I disassembled it. Not much help if the spring is a missing part, however.

all i seem to find is kits for 69-72 wheels.. anyone know where to pick up a 67-68 kit??

Same thing. GM kept the same interior parts under the steering wheel even though the cosmetics guys did a major superficial redesign. Well the horn button is definately different, but the interior stuff is the same.

I have a '68 C/10 Chevy Stepside and a '71 GMC Jimmy. I have been all over the steering wheels on both. The parts are the same. Whomever your vendor is, they should label the kit " '67-'72" to avoid confusion.
