How much Toe in dropped 1959 1/2 ton
 

Well I finally got the mono leaf to go with my drop axle. I also did the drag link flip from www.droppedaxles.com

Now I need to set the toe in. How much toe is should I have? Can I set it with the truck in the air because it is a straight axle?

1/16 to 1/8.

Depends on the tires (bias or radial). Bias ply like Cajun said, radials closer to 0.

Honestly; Unless you took the tie rod (between the wheels) off, it shouldn't have changed, because it is a straight axle. Although it never hurts to get it checked.
Don't do it with the tires in the air. Wheel bearing and king pin slop will make it change when you set it down.

3" or 4" axle? Did you take out any leafs in front and rear? I like where it sits, looks good.

4" axle with 3" drop mono leaf. The mono leaf dropped it more like 3.5". The rear has a flipped axle a monster notch and is loaded with concrete at the time of the picture. I will be adding a mono leaf to the rear that should put it a little lower than the picture with no load in the bed.

If you want to do the mono leaf and a 4" axle you will need a steering arm kit from http://www.droppedaxles.com/CHEVY_AXLES.html to flip your drag link and you will also have to move your brake line upwards on the frame so the drag link bolt will not rip the brake line off when you hit a bump. Here is a picture of the moved brake line so you can see what I am talking about. You can see the stock brake line hole just below the new location.

I think the book calls for 1/16 to 3/16 but in most cases an eight should do.

For many years when I checked and set the toe in I would raise each wheel and hold a pencil point to the center of the tread (with something to steady my hand) while I slowly spun the tire with my other hand to mark a line around the center of the tread.
With that on each tire it's easy to have a helper hold the other end of the tape and get accurate measurements on toe in. My self I would measure it with the tires sitting on the shop floor or sitting on blocks if it is too low to be able to measure under sitting on the floor.
