Re: Welded rear

why ??? is this truck just used for the strip ? if not ... id say no ! you dont have enuff power to warrent it ! and there will be more problems than its worth !

Re: Welded rear

Are you only gonna race it? If so go for it.

Re: Welded rear

im with dj... race only? GO FOR IT. just remember if if it breaks something it will most likely break more then it originally would so it may cost you in the long run. but for a budget racer i say DO IT.

Re: Welded rear

as for breakage its the original 12bolt small axle gives me a excuse to tell wife i need to find a 9in. ? how strong are the stock axles 27 -30 spline? had same engine in my toyota with a 700r4 and welder toy axles yess i know toy axles are stronger than my 12 bolt and i did drive my toy every day so i am aware if the quirks

Re: Welded rear

NHRA has a rule against it, (for good reason) and if your caught don't be surprised if your black ball'd from the track. Tech really hates when you slip something by them unseen. First line of General Reg 2:11

WELDED SPIDER GEAR REAR ENDS PROHIBITED IN ALL CLASSES

Re: Welded rear

Yes welded spiders will work. I understand the budget thing but when you weld those spiders you turn the rear into a bomb. Its not a question of if it will break its just when. Btw a 12 bolt will hold up to most of what you can throw at it.

I tried it once and grenaded the rearend first time out, wont be doin that again. Broke my posi unit one weekend and was in hurry to get back to track and just threw in an old carrier I had laying around so I couold get back on the track the following weekend. In hind sight, I shoulda just waited for my new unit to arrive.

Re: Welded rear

I say DON'T WELD them. They will break and you'll go down the track on 3 wheels. If anything, buY a mini-spool. Chris.

onlyifihadachevy 03-15-2010 08:26 PM

Re: Welded rear

My advise is not to because the rear wheels feel like they want to hop, and feel unstable. And if they don't allow it why risk it.

Re: Welded rear

If you weld it keep the wife and kids out of it for sure.

when it blows through a 9 inch in it with a mini spool thats the most COST EFFECTIVE means.

This is not even gonna pull off. If you do weld it you weld the spider gears not the ring and pinion.

I'll check on a mini spool and see if I can get it less than JEG'S. THEY ARE 132.99

Thats funny??? How do you put that welded ring and pinion in??

Kev if you find a deal on the mini let me know too...I'm going to have a traction problem and your going to need a wider rear bumper so I can draft at the track....

X2, that setup will never work. I got a mini spool for my 10 bolt in my little truck for $89.00 at the Hot Rod Barn down in town. I busted the transmission off the motor and twisted the driveshaft once coming off the light but have never broke the rearend.

Lol at least you don't have to worry about setting the backlash. Haha its just a picture I found on the web. It made me laugh. And no I do not recommend welding a diff. I did it once and thought I was a hero until a year later when it let go and a chunk got wedged between the ring and pinion and locked up the rear wheels.

Mini spool in 30 sline axles will hold up under moderate power for dd I drove my 65 for a year on the street and highway with now wear on the axles and It only cost me $80 off ebay.

Re: Welded rear

I have ran welded up 8.5 10 bolt rears for years with out fail. Engines were 400 sbc and 355 sbc. All were turbo 350 trans with a shift kit. Cars were 78 and 81 camaro's and 79 nova. All were footbrake cars with B&M 3000 rpm and ACC 3500 rpm converters. I was a poor boy that wanted to play so that is the corner that I cut. :exit:

Actaully, welding the pinion to the ring WILL work. After the great depression, we used to use rear ends as props on our planes when the original ones would break. The Japanese Kamikaze planes used this trick as well to keep the overall cost down of the planes that would not be coming back!!

Re: Welded rear

if you weld it dont weld the spider gears together
weld the gears that attach to the axle to the carrier it will be much stronger
