adding passenger side door mirror ?
 

My '63 never had a mirror on the passenger side.

Are there 'nuts' in the door already?

Any easy way to line it up?

Just ordered new mirrors, and a bunch of other parts!:metal:

I got mirrors, park and tail lens, repair for window crank, and heater core & controls. Found a '83 for suspension parts last week so should be a busy spring.

there are not nuts welded to the inside, there is a strengthening bracket welded in, I do not know how you would get the holes in the right spot, but here is a pic of the inside of a rh door that I had cut apart...

If you make a paper template from the exposed drivers side tapped openings, then reversed the template to the passenger side it should be close. I don't have access to my truck to measure my theory! Alot of templates for Chevrolet Custom Accessories simply state to reverse the template to the passenger side. Can anyone run out and measure?

You could use Riv-nuts if you don't want to take the door apart.

As noted above I made a template off the driver side and flipped it over to drill my passenger door. Inside the door I used serrated flange nuts since they spread the load and are easier to manage than lock washers. I used masking tape across the top of the nut holding it to a long handled box wrench, and had my wife turn the screws from the outside. It's very tight getting your hand in there.

Photos helped to see what I have to work with (cold and wet outside)

I was thinking of the template, I do lots of set-up stuff for work, so it should be easy <G> I will post here how they line up, and thread size for bolts as soon as I get it installed- hope by mid week.

Can't find the original template. Anyone measured their truck? The original antenna has a Chevrolet crest below the fender extension on the body of the mount. Nice place for a crest, nobody can see it.

Just an update.

My printer was not working so I made a template from the drivers side, flipped it and drilled the p side. Hit 2 of 3 holes perfect, and 3 hit the side of the backing in the door.

The mirror stem base was flat not curved like original :( Guess that the price of cheep repo parts.

Did the measurements from the 1961 installation instructions come close?

I will have to measure.

Without removing the mirror,
4-1/8 from front, 2-1/8 from top to center of holes.


Without using a template, it is very hard to get an accurate measurement for both of these, as the door curves.


FWIW getting a nut on the front screw was the hardest part of the install, got to have the window rolled down just right, and small arms. I was able to install with out help, holding wrench in door and turning screw, but not fun.

I drill them from the inside with a right-angle drill and a short 1/8" drill bit, followed by a Uni-bit from the outside, to the correct diameter...approximately 1/4". The backing plate helps align the Uni-bit from the outside, to the correct hole locations for the mirror mounting arm.

My original driver's door had the correct style mirror, so it had the original holes exposed.
