how do i fix the ignition switch 2005 SS??
 

hey guys, hows it goin?

ok, so heres the problem. some scum bags tried to steal my brothers truck, its a 2005 chevy SS pickup 6.0L AWD.

the damage done was that they broke all the plastice on the column and the ignition trim ring, and they tried to stick a screwdriver in the key slot.

does anybody know how to remove just the lock cylinder, without having to pull the whole assembly? yes the truck does have the chip in key.

or will i have to replace the whole thing, something that he doesnt want to do in order to avoid having differnt keys for door locks and ignition...

got to replace the whole lock assembly and have a key programed by gm i believe gm and we key the new lcok cyliender to macth the doors

ok, my bro left me in charge of gettin it fixed and i was tryin to avoid goin to the dealership cuz i know its gonna sit there for a few days, plus the bill im sure will be huge.

Can you insert the key and turn it to the run position? If you cant, getting the lock cylinder out is hard without doing some carefull drilling. let me know

yeah, the key still fits and still turns the truck on, turns foward and back like its suppose to,

i was hopin to just be able to replace the cylinder. i was told that the dealership can duplicate it to match the old key just with the vin #. how true is this, and tryin to keep the same key for doors and ignition.

all you need is the new lock cylinder. it will come with all the springs and tumblers. you just pull the tumblers out of the original noting which tumbler number it is. they are numbered 1-4 so if the first tumbler you pull out is a 2 you grab a new #2 tumbler and drop into the correct slot in the new cylinder and so on unitl you have all the tumblers placed in the new cylinder. No programing necessary. Since you can get the key in the ignition and turn it to the run position and using a pick or an awl or something similar press the little lock button up underneath the cylinder. while holding the little button up pull out on the cylinder. Its maybe like a 30-45 min job. you still retain the original key. Take the vin # into dealer and tell em to order a cylinder for the truck.
