rear disc brake conversion
 

hey folks, want to install rear disc brakes on my truck. what calipers and can I use. Seems like I heard calipers from a seville and discs from a firebird. Don't want to pay high dollar for a kit when it isn't necessary. Thanks:bowtie: :)

I would also like to know what to use, if the price is reasonable enough, I want rear Discs too.

I know a complete 9" Ford housing out of a lincoln equipped with disc brakes will work, you need to relocate the perches but the width is very close and it is already a 5 on 5 bolt pattern...not to mention it is a 9"...stronger and easier to change gears.

I am sure others will chime in too..but that is what i know.

Its the rear disks and calipers from a caddy. I "think" its a late 70's model el darado, but not sure on this one.

I know Mike Reeh did a disc conversion on his truck but I think he got a kit. Might find some cheap ones out there.

My friend just did a conversion on his 82 and he used rear discs off a 96 chevy caprice police cruiser. He had to fab the caliper brackets and more. He is still working out all the bugs(and there are many). If you believe the aftermarket systems are expensive it's because they allready engineered all the components to be trouble free. Be sure to research all the issues and costs associated with a part-swapping conversion. When I convert to rear discs I want a 1-800 # to call when I have trouble.

It from the Cadillac Seville/Eldorado. Same bolt pattern, but you will have to make the mounts for your axle. If you find a used one, the calipers could be shot which you need new ones and you surely won't get used discs...

hmm.. anybody know how big of a job it is to make a caddy rear-end fit? like changing the spring mounts and getting them in the proper spot and everything? also, what gear ratio were these 9's?

Yeah I did the rear discs but its on a 3/4ton axle (14 bolt full floater)... if anyone wants the info Ill be glad to share.. Its not really a kit that I used, just some custom made brackets. the rotors and calipers are GM just like on the front of my truck. The brake lines I had made by Earls Performance

Go to www.MPBRAKES.com . If you browse their website they have alot of info on doing it with their kit or if you are pretty good with fabrications you can use their info as a guideline to do your own with parts from the boneyard or parts counter.

Hey Mike, when you did your conversion did you also change your booster? Any problems with the braking? Spongy,lots of pedal travel etc.? By the way everyone got some great drawings for caliper mount brackets from a guy on ebay.:bowtie:

While your on the subject of ebay....I saw an ad- search for"12 bolt rear" and found an ad that uses a camaro caliper or cadilac. Check it out!

Yea, the prints I got call out for 83 camaro calipers and 88 light duty 4x4 front rotors. But they have to be drilled as they are 6 lug. I plan on using seville rotors instead as they are the same bolt pattern I believe.
