4x4 tone

Its time for me to run exhaust on my 72 k20 project and I was thinking dual thrush welded mufflers with 2 1/2 pipe and turn downs:smoke: Just would like to hear what everyone else is doing with their systems?

Re: 4x4 tone

welcome... I grew up in Fairmount, IN...

Lots of options out there... some like flowmasters, some don't...

some like basic turbo's, some don't...

the tip will make a good difference in the sound....
Best bet would be to hit a carshow and listen to SBC's

Re: 4x4 tone

I ran duals with Dynomax Turbos with turndown that were right at the front of the bed. At idle the reverb from the street was deafning. This time I am running Super Turbos (longer) and dumping them both out the passenger side in front of the back tire. My gas tank in the back prevents going behind the tire or out the back without them hanging down or going between the spring and frame.

On my 70 K5 with a 400 sbc, I have repo 2 1/2" ramhorn manifolds, dual 2 1/2" exhaust with Flowmaster Super 40's - I think it sounds great. The tips exit behind each rear tire out the side.

On my 69 k20 with a 454, I have Dynomax headers with I believe to 2 3/4" pipe back to Dynomax Ultra flow mufflers the 2 1/2" straight out back with turndowns right before the receiver hitch. I like the sound of this setup also.

However, I've heard a couple Magnaflow systems on sbc's and I think those mufflers have a great sound - much better than Flowmasters.

i'm running 40 originals on my blazer with a 400 SBC .030 over bore. thing just sounds mean and will scream down the freeway pushin 40" tires I love it...to me the louder the better.

but if you're unsure what you are looking for, or what differant setups sound like...i agree with the previous post...hit up some socials or car shows and listen to a few. i'm sure you'll hear something you like there

Re: 4x4 tone

I do like the flowmaster 40 series and had them on my 71 chevelle:metal: I'm kinda stuck on the thrush welded mufflers since i went and bought two of them today but i guess i could take em back:lol:

What i was hoping out of these mufflers was a deep but loud tone out of my mild 350 with flowtech headers! I probably should of mentioned that in my first post:waah:

By the way a car show is a good idea period!

Re: 4x4 tone

It all depends on what you are looking for. Throaty, mellow, loud? There are so many companies out that you can make your own sound. Personally I have a 486 BBC with Hooker Comps 2" Primaries to 3" tubing to 40 Series Flowmaster. Its loud and throaty.

Re: 4x4 tone

You can go onto some of the websites and listen to some of the mufflers online might try that or try youtube and do some searching for sound clips! 2 1/2 sounds right should sound good. I have ran glass packs on a few rigs not to spendy and sound decent. I want to run flowmaster or magnaflows on my next rig!

Re: 4x4 tone

I have spent a lot of time on youtube listening to sound clips and thats why i went with the thrush welded mufflers I love flowmasters but cant afford them rite now and the thrush have a nice deep tone and i love the way they sound at idle especially with a cam! Now i just have to run some pipe so i can mount the SOB's!
