Need rear end work

Been thinking about swapping my open diff gears out for a posi unit myself instead of taking it to a shop. Anyone here done this? What unit, cost etc..... it is a 12 bolt, I think it has 3.08s...

I dont know your skill level but overall it is not to hard to do it just takes a very good shim selection and some patience, a dial indicator and inch pound torque wrench unless you can have someone experienced drop by and do a spin on the pinion and check it by feeling it and backlash is easy enough to check, but overall as long as you have the gear mesh right you will be fine. You will need an impact with nutz to tighten pinion nut enough to move the crush sleeve. All of this is assuming new bearings will be installed, good luck

you also need a service manual with instructions// if you dont get right the first time all you do is flush those hundreds down the drain and start rom scratch

you have a 3.08 gear and you want a no spin? unless you have a BIG engine and frequently drive in mud, i don't see the need. get a 3.73 in there and an OD trans and call it a day. 3.08 is soooo lame. it was the only mod my dad made to his 87 burb when he bought it fresh up from texas (10 years ago). the gear change woke up that 350 and the gas mileage didn't suffer 'cause the engine didn't work as hard on the hills we have in the northeast (also trailer towing). but i guess in texas there are no hills to worry about and as long as you don't tow anything. just giving my opinion based on my experiences.

ok, so I am not sure on the 3.08, that is what a former GM worker told me it has.... I am happy with the ratio and it spins like hell when I put my foot in it.... 350 with about 330hp and a th350 in it.
