Crank Position Sensor on 8.1L?
 

Has anyone here replaced this?

We bought a 2002 8.1L Suburban and it has started to stall... I searched online and found that a bad crank position sensor can cause this and is common on this motor. Unfortunately, I'm finding conflicting info on where it is located... one said rear - back of block, near tranny... other said near the EGR by a fuel line. So, I'm hoping someone here has the right info.

Also, where is the best place to get a new one? The dealer or a parts store?

IMPORTANT: For additional diagnostic information, refer to DTC P1336.



Install a scan tool.
With a scan tool, monitor the powertrain control module for DTCs. If other DTCs are set, except DTC P1336, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List for the applicable DTC that set.
With a scan tool, select the crankshaft position variation learn procedure.
Observe the fuel cut-off for the engine that you are performing the learn procedure on.
The scan tool instructs you to perform the following items:
Block the drive wheels.
Apply the vehicles parking brake.
Cycle the ignition from OFF to ON.
Apply and hold the brake pedal.
Start and idle the engine.
Turn OFF the A/C.
Place the vehicles transmission in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).
The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the procedure. The scan tool only displays the condition that inhibits the procedure. The scan tool monitors the following components:
Crankshaft position (CKP) sensors activity- If there is a CKP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set.
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor activity-If there is a CMP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set.
Engine coolant temperature (ECT)-If the engine coolant temperature is not warm enough, idle the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches the correct temperature.
With the scan tool, enable the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure. IMPORTANT: While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine responds to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.
Slowly increase the engine speed to the RPM that you observed.
Immediately release the throttle when fuel cut-off is reached.
The scan tool displays Learn Status: Learned this ignition If the scan tool does NOT display this message and no additional DTCs set, refer to Symptoms - Engine. If a DTC set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List for the applicable DTC that set.
Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully

Crank position sensor is at the left rear of the engine. PIA to get to. One bolt, but it is kind of tight to get to. I replaced one on our '02 truck a couple years ago.

Big time pain to get to be very carefull not to break it off in the block then you will have serious issues. I soak it with some penetrant fluid move it a little then spray it again the key is to get the penetrant down the shaft of the crank sensor to lube the orings. The sensor is very long so extreme care must be taken. Unless you are very handy with your tools and have a lift I won't recommed you try it. Would have the dealership do it also you will have to perform a crank relearn after it's installed for best performace.

It's on the top rear of the engine, behind the intake manifold. The EGR valve is in the center, the crankshaft position sensor is on the driver's side next to it. The engine oil pressure sensor is on the passenger's side next to the the EGR valve. There's a large wire bundle splitting offto all three of those components. The connector to the CKP sensor has 3 pins, wiring colors arelight green, a yellow/black, and a dark blue/white.

You need to raise the vehicle andremove the fuel line bracket from the bellhousing stud, then from obove remove the driver's side ignition coil bolts and reposition the coilto get to the sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Use penetrating oilaround the sensor and allow it to soak in, then remove the CKP sensor bolt and gently twist the sensor back and forth. When it's free,remove it.
