Minor break down yesterday.

So yesterday, after work, I met my Lady for dinner and a couple of cold PBR's. After leaving the restaurant, we drove home..her in the Malibu, me in the '73. I got about 1/4 of the way home and my truck dies. Seemed like it was outta gas...my gauge was just below 1/4 tank... seemed odd because the gauge is usually pretty accurate. Anyhow, I call her up and she brings me some gas. I put a little in the tank, and some in the carb. I decided to pull the fuel line off to see if she was pumping gas. It ran for about 30 seconds with the gas I poured in the carb. Never started pumping. First thought...fuel pump. Luckily, I had an extra at the house. We flew home, picked it up and swapped them out. She fired right up. The weird thing is, the pump I pulled out, just testing it by hand, seemed to be pumping. ?? Also, when I got home, I seemed to smell a little gas. I'm thinking it actually vapor locked or something, maybe a crack in one of the rubber lines??

Anyone else ever experience something like this?

Have you checked your oil? To see if it smells like gas? The thing that I have heard happening most of the time is the diaphragm going out. Thus leaking gas into the crank case.

I actually did. I didn't notice any smell of gas in the oil. I can't be too sure though.

I love this:

Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver.

Check any rubber lines on the suction side of the pump. I had a crack in a line on my suburban and it would die and then crank back intermittently. Jay
