Can't seem to figure what what is going on but when I step on the brake the lights in the instrument panel come on. Also the the rear tail lights do not come on. I looked under the dash and don't see anything spliced or grounded out. The turn signals flash on the dash but that is it as well.

I would check the tail lite grounding. This is where I had issues and it will make the whole system do weird stuff, IIRC. I also had the original connectors not make contact with the bulb; they stuck down and did not spring back. Have you messed with the tail lites lately?

No. I'll look at the tail lights and start tracing some wires. Hopefully it's an easy fix. still have to go out and find a radiator for it.

Oh yeah, just in case you've been under the dash, there is a connector from the dash harness to the tail lite extension harness right near the firewall above the gas pedal. Check and make sure this is plugged in.

Did the tails work before?

Problems like this are almost always ground related. When new, these trucks depended on sheetmetal to return the ground side of the circuit to the battery. 45-50 years of crud and corrosion can block that path. Best solution is to run a separate wire to each light bucket and connect those to a common ground. Also make sure the negative side of the battery is connected to both the engine block and the frame, or from the battery cable connection on the engine block to the frame. All those grounds depending on the frame need a way to get back to the battery.

It also helps to clean the light sockets with a battery brush or fine sandpaper, and coat the bulb contacts with dielectric grease. This will keep the contacts corrosion free far longer.

thanks for the tips. Does anybody have a wiring diagram that I can enlarge. I looked at the ones in the FAQ's but can't really read them.

Check the bulbs also, I have seen where a filament in the bulb drops onto the other filament and then feeds back to the dash when brakes are applied

When i was rewiring my truck at one point it would step on my brake pedall and the the dashlights would flash on an off through the blinker...:dohh::m6:

Most of my issues ended up being that my high/low beam floor switch..that looked fine untill i attempted to take it appart and it crumbled into a pile of rusty insides...was somehow running stuff backwards or something...It still doesnt add up to me but...everything worked after that. GO FIGURE!
