Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
4 Attachment(s)
1985 GMC High Sierra. Only thing wrong is the power steering pump leaks. The oil pressure gauge starts around 30 then I rev it up and it pins passed 60 and never comes back down. No other issues. Body is clean, some dents. Has been repainted the original color. Seat is ripped and A/C is out of frion. Once I replaced the battery it hasn't had an issue starting. I paid $1400 for it.
What do you guys think? |
Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
Looks like you did well on the truck and price. I like it...
If the shaft isn't wobbly you can get a rebuild kit and just use the seals on the PS pump for not much. First guess on the oil pressure reading is the sending unit. |
Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
That truck would sell for triple that here and probably have at least a little rust. You guys got it made with the rust free stuff.

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
My oil pressure gauge pins past 60 lol

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
Great price for a 3/4 ton truck.

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
Thanks. I thought it was good then started to doubt it until I saw ads online for similar and 2-3 times more in price. How are the Autozone pumps? I see that with the reservoir they are $34 and without they are $38. LMC has them for $79 so how do they compare?
There is no wobble on it. Is it a pain to replace the seals or pretty straight forward once the pump is off? |

I'm kind of from the area(central valley) and I would of waited for a better deal. I bought my truck for 800.00. There out there for great prices, you just have to have the cash when they come along. Nice truck by the way. I think you paid a fair price.

Very nice truck! I say well worth the money.

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
The reservoir is just a can that goes around the pump with o-rings sealing the spots that can leak. Once its out and you remove the bolts and big pressure fitting, it just pops apart. Clean, replace o-rings, put back together, paint, and reinstall.
Check to see if its leaking from the center behind the pulley. I think that would be the only place that would make you need to replace it. Of course if you can press the big bushing out and the new one in, you can rebuild it for the price of the kit. Have a look here: http://tc.wagoneer.net/sblog/static.php?page=ps_rebuild I just searched: gm ps pump rebuild The pulley pulleroffer and presseronner can be borrowed from the parts places. |

I think you did fine. I live in the central valley, and I paid 500. for my 86 gmc 4x4. It wasn't bought without problems though. There was quite a lot I had to fix, and I still need to re-paint it. For the guy from the east coast (cableguy0), there is rust here too man!

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
ok i have a smiliar problem, i just bout an 85 for $1300, the "steering rod" is a little loose where it begins to go into the firewall, wondering if there is a bushing or something gone or what might be causing this, any ideas?

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
I think that is a very fair price for a rust free 3/4 ton. I personally wouldn't buy anything from Autozone(even if it is "lifetime warranty"). Lifetime warranty covers the part, it doesn't cover your time to take out and reinstall. Go with NAPA for aftermarket parts

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
Sounds and looks like a good deal to me. A suggestion on the oil pressure gauge; a new sending unit would probably cure the issue, and it's usually less than $20 at any parts store.

Companies that do rebuilds like that for Autozone and similar stores kind of have a cheap way of going about the rebuild. Basically they take an old unit apart, fix whatever is wrong with it, clean it, and put it back together with any old parts that weren't considered "broken". Usually these parts are easily spotted because their warranties are only good for a couple years or less. Spend a little extra cash and buy a rebuild unit with a lifetime warranty (all replaceable parts have been replaced with new), or a completely new units. |
Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
Looks like a good deal to me. And we have clean, rust free trucks all over the place out here.

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
I think the reason there isn't a cat on it is because of the g.v.w.. I know all of the 1/2 tons had cats, and I think (although not positive) that 3/4 tons without a full floating rear had cats as well. I had an 81 3/4 ton (full floater) without any cats.

Re: Did I get a good deal or ripped off?
Yeah, from the coast out by 'Frisco. I bought a new bed for it (it was 200. cheaper than parts and time to fix the original), and I'm dumping the 350 for a built 305 in the next few weeks or so. Then off to paint.
