side mount spare on fleetside?

so i had this idea the other day i really like the stepside trucks with the side mounted spare tire. i myself have one of these but the entire bed is in terrible shape and the fender with the wheel cutout has rusted off completely. so ive been thinkin about converting to a fleetside bed. so heres my question is it possible to put a side mounted spare tire on a fleetside bed? if so has anyone on here done it? i dunno it may be a silly idea but i figured this would be the best place to put it out there. input? suggestions? pictures?

I built one for my farm truck. If you're any kind of handy with metal fab it's a fun afternoon project.

Re: side mount spare on fleetside?

A lot of Fleetsides that don't have the spare underneath have it mounted upright inside the bed. That's how I have mine right now. They make a bracket for it, but mine is just held in place with a cable lock running through the stake pocket and a bungee cord. When I decide whether to leave it in the bed or put it underneath, I'll buy which ever bracket I need.

Here's how the spare was mounted in my 69 K20

You can kind of see the bracket in the bed - I believe that was from the factory. I've still got the bed but its not very accessible for a better pic now.

Just re-read your post - never seen a fleetside with the tire mounted on the outside of the bed - sorry.

I've always wanted to try to reverse a wheel tub (put it upside down) into the bedside and mount the tire so it's flush with the top of the bedside (maybe a hair below it), like how they're mounted in a suburban, but I think shortbeds are too "short" to try that :(

I guess nobody got what you were asking. I see exactly what you're thinking. I've never seen it and most would probably make negative remarks. But,do your own thing is what it's about. It would take some custom sheet metal/body work, but may look kinda cool if the rest of the truck style fit the scheme. I picture a kinda Continental look. Like late-50s/early-60s customs.

Did a quick google search & couldn't find a picture easily.

I'm pretty sure that either late 40's Hudson Hornet or Plymouth pickups had an inlet side mount spare set into the side of a fleetside type bed, set behind the driver's door, with a continental type metal full tire cover, rather like you see on some 30's & 40's sedans that mounted one or two spares up into the front fenders.

Seek, & maybe you can do a better job of finding a photo of one than I did.

Re: side mount spare on fleetside?

I kept the spare wheel mount off the back door of my old 91 Trooper when it went for scrap. They have the same bolt pattern as a six lug chevy (my 67 wore a couple of spare trooper wheels whilst I was having the tyres remounted on the truck wheels to cure some leaks) The plan is to make up a bracket a bit like the man with the "my name is earl" moustache above and bolt the mount to it at the appropriate height inside the bed. My spare would be too fat for the underbed holder even if it wasn't impossible due to the huge welded on tow hitch thats in the way.

Re: side mount spare on fleetside?

Are you thinking of recessing the tire into the side of the fleetside or having it extend out? I would think extending out beyond the truck would be a bad idea.

I think he wants to recess it into the body. I'm not sure he's even still watching the thread any more. It's an older thread.
This thread is odd. Somehow it got to be about two different things by someone misunderstanding the original question.
