Wear safety glasses!
 

Well, I was grinding on the frame doing a little work and got a hot spark in my eye. Was even wearing safety glasses most of the day. I took the safety glasses off and there was just a tiny bit more to grind. :o it was hot enough to burn and embed itself into my iris. Went to bed with a headache and then hurt worse in the morning but i had to go to work. The following morning I left work and went to the emergency room. They had to pick the metal piece out of my iris with a needle and use a drill(yes, an actual powered drill) to drill out the rust that had started forming! It was most uncomfortable! All of that over not wearing my safety glasses, just for a minute. I just wanted to remind everyone to wear their safety glasses! oh and if you get metal in your eye, dont wait long enough for it to start rusting inside of your eye;)

Sorry you had to learn the hard way,but it'll probably stick in your memory better that way too, is another way to look at it.

I deal with this sometimes at work, there we wear safety glasses (with sideshields), and a faceshield over them. Sometimes stuff still gets in. In that case, dealing with it immediately is essential, the longer you let it go, the worse it's probably gonna get. On many jobs we have a safety professional trained to remove foriegn objects from eyes, and do it onsite.

I've done similar things and it is definitely a hard lesson learned.

Glad you posted though. Maybe somebody else can learn from your (our) mistakes and not have to go through the suffering.

never spin bearing with compress air to blow off to clean bearings by spinning them to warp speed then the bearing cage explodes and cuts ur finger half off and one bearing to the nads.

OUCH!!!! I cant remember how many times i've spun bearings with an air compressor! im glad one never came apart on me! In my high school Ag Lab class I had a wire wheel come apart while on an angle grinder. it shot a thousand little needle like wires into my face, lip, through my shirt etc. not fun.

the rust rings will actually start within 5 min.
I had the same thing happen, hit dead center on my left eye... this was in summer of 2000, and I still have scars on my eye and degraded vison. I also waited 24 hrs... we were in a sand storm and you kinda expect to get stuff in your eye. Everything was fine till the 2nd loutenant scratched the hell out of my eye getting the fragment out. They used a small air drill with a buffer wheel on it for my eye.
I still get wigged out thinking about it 10 years later.

Adny is right, it starts very quickly, your eyes are basically floating in salt-water.
I have had several things in my eyes at one time or another over the years, every one of them while wearing safety glasses. I have only had the actual "cut it out" once though, that was plenty.
Now I wear better-fitting, curved to your face, with side coverage glasses. After spending all of that money on LASIK, I don't take chances.

My dad had this happen to him a few years back, now I got to read stuff for him. But like you all said, at least I learned real quick to wear safety glasses no matter what. It has saved me more than once.

Just had the same thing happen to me. Waited 4 days and it had rusted pretty deep. Sal****er and bare metal are not a good combination. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=396672&page=2

I was wearing safety glasses. I would recommend full goggles when grinding. Its been 2 weeks since I got it drilled out now and I'm doing pretty good. Had to wear sunglasses during daylight hours for a week and a half but I'm able to stand the light now. Vision doesn't seem to be impaired either.

Yeah, Im not sure about the er doc's work. I have a follow up appt. with an eye doc. I can still see a little spec in my eye. :-( Probably need to get it drilled AGAIN!! once is bad. Im not thrilled about getting my eyeball drilled on again!!!

I had a chip of slag get in my eye years ago. It was half in my pupil and half out. The worst pain was that every time I blinked it scratched the inside of my eye lid. I wear safety glasses but goggles are the way to go if you can tolerate them. My issue is fogging. Yes. Glasses are just not enough even with side shields. Goggles or full face shield. If you are grinding a lot, use something that is tinted.

I very good at wearing my glasses at work,At home.....Not so much. I had the old drill out routine before. Its not fun.

I even wear eye protection while using the compressed air nozzle to blow crud off of parts.

I've gone to the ER three times in my life for junk that flew in my eyes, all because I was using an air nozzle to just quickly blow off the dirt.

I was wire wheeling paint off of a part that I used paint stripper on. I hit a spot that was still wet, and it somehow flung between my glasses and eyes. It burned like hell. My contacts saved my eyes. I ripped out my contacts immediately and flushed my eyes with a nearby hose. I still have a red spot under my lower lid of my right eye, about 6 years later.

I used to do small engine repair out of my garage to supplement my income.
One time I had used a bunch of penetrating oil & it pooled on a mower deck. I don't remember what I dropped, but I splashed penetrating oil, gunk, & GOK what else in both eyes & managed to scratch both corneas.
I was confined to my dark bedroom with patches over both eyes for several days because I couldn't tolerate any light.
Being blind, even temporarily is not fun.

Good thing you got it promptly. Even home, I keep a bottle of eyewash handy.
If in ANY doubt, get it looked at.
