My Son's '87

He's almost 16 but we couldn't wait to get a truck. All the kids want square body's now. How cool is that? He found an '87 in town on CL so we went to take a look. It was the nicest one we looked at over the course of several months. Some minor issues but we wanted a project. First thing we did was strip the interior and repaint the old brown stuff dark gray. Installed a new headliner and made some door panel inserts. New dash topper to cover the cracks and seat cover for the ratty seat. The 4-6 kit is on the way and then tires. Here's where we are so far. We made a mistake and didn't take any before photos.

My son has learned to scrounge around Pick-a-Part, weld, paint, improvise, and trouble shoot electrical. Next he's going under to install the lowering kit.

I like it! Dang that things clean, it's so much nicer than my first square body was. I like that you and your son are building it. Thats what me and my dad did with mine and I'll remember that one truck forever.

Thanks everyone. It's only been a month and we've had a blast so far. We spend a lot of time together and get along really good. Kids appreciate cars more when they put their sweat into it. I hope he learns that some of the best modifications are the ones that you build yourself.

Sweeet !!! :metal:

It's nice to hear stories of young bucks getting out and doing something creative instead of sitting in front of a computer/play-station all day.

Hats off to you both.....

We just picked up the McGaughys 4-6 kit. I'll take some photos when we're done with that project.

My wife thinks that I'm more into the truck than my son. Then she tells me that she wants to start looking for a '72 for herself. I love my family!

Awesome to see ya'll working together, I wish I would have had a project like that with my father. But I get to do mine all by myself, maybe I can get my 11 year old brother interested in it...

Thats a nice first truck. I got a square body when i was 16, it was my grandfathers old truck, and my dad and i restored it. My son is 3 weeks old i really hope i can hand down my 85 when he gets ready to drive. Dont let your son sell it when he gets older. He'll regret it. I still do.

Looks like we need a thread about father/son, father/daughter, mother/son, etc... projects.

Thats awesome nice truck.

Though im older then your son me and my dad are building my 86 shortie. He is helping me with all the welding aspects. Even made me some link bars and what not for the air ride.

Kunzy:

Value this time with your dad. He's having a blast so don't let him make you think it's a pain. I'm having a blast with my son's truck. We get along really well as we've been hanging out together cause he races karts and mini sprints. We spend a lot of time together. I'm hoping we can do a ground up bagger in the near future.

Re: My Son's '87

I showed my son a 76 C10 I told him I was going to buy him (craigslist), he turned his nose at it, and then watched me cruise CL for a while. He liked the old fiero I viewed.... I'm worried. Granted he is only 7, he has a few years to start learning better.

By 7 I was sanding the low areas on cars/trucks and painting stuff like propane tanks in beds and odds and ends (think 1" brush and a gallon paint can with 2oz of paint in it, lol). But by golly I was working on cars with the old man!

The father son stuff is something that no one will ever be able to rob from you when you're old and gray.

Slick truck btw, lucky boy you got there.
