Tailgate install?
 

Trying to determine the best way to install the tailgate after paint. I don't want to scratch the side of the bed with the tailgate mounts as I push them down to the boltholes. I know to install one side first then the other. Any good tips, tricks, remedies for doing this without the paint gettin messed up? :fb:

David, do you have any blue painters tape, you could use that to protect the paint. when you get close to where the bolt holes are you could fold the tape onto itself and have it running down behind the trunion ( but taped to the side above this area), you should be able to pull that piece out prior to bolting since it wont be sticky. hope you have an extra set of hands. let us know the progress.

To my knowledge you can not install one side then the other. The way that the trunnions are designed for these trucks, both sides must be installed at the same time. The tape will help to hold the trunnions in place and you will need a extra set of hands to install the gate.

Uh oh. Conflicting stories. I did install it before paint and had bolted one trunnion in place, put the tailgate on it, then held the trunnion on the other end of the tailgate and slide it down from an upward angle, but with the paint on it now it is scary cause I know it is a tight fit. I guess the blue painters tape is the best option for now. Or I could butter it up.....:lol: Seriously, I understand that using grease is a little messy to clean, but it will actually save the paint??? Any thoughts??

No grease needed! Works very well!

if you have a thin cargo strap wrap it around the tailgate and use an engine crane to lift it up in place while installing hardware

I have the TD Trunnions. Am having trouble installing the tailgate with them. With the original hinges there was enough looseness I could bolt in one side and then guide in the other. With the TD Trunnions there is no looseness and I cannot get the tailgate in at all. Anyone have any tips?
