Tach for my '83

Im lookin to buy a tach for my '83. I want to put it on the steering column. I dont want it so big that it blocks the speedo or fuel guage. What tachs are you guys using?

Re: Tach for my '83

Cyberdyne C270E061N, which is 3 3/8ths so that doesn't help you. They do make a 2 1/16 mini tach though. Pt. # A054E061N

But what i want to know is how are you going to mount it on the steering column? i tried mounting mine on the steering column but first it blocked the other gauges. i was reluctantly willing to settle with that dilema, but secondly i couldn't get a solid way to mount it on the steering column. So i ended up, not being a smoker, mounting it in the ash tray. i am planning on moving it either to the top of the dash without any drilling or mounting in an overhead console. My goal is not to drill into the dash.

Re: Tach for my '83

Well, im not too sure. I was thinking about using a hose clamp around the column. That just seemed like a good, convienient place to have a small tach mounted. I was thinking about just a small, cheap sunpro like this little guy: http://www.jegs.com/i/Sunpro/885/CP7906/10002/-1
Nothing too fancy, just good engough to do the job.

maybe this guy: http://www.jegs.com/i/Auto-Meter/105/2301/10002/-1
but im concerned that the 3 3/4" one will be too big

Re: Tach for my '83

Oh, i see---it comes with that mounting bracket, so using a hose clamp(or two) would work well. (the sunpro)

Re: Tach for my '83

i don't know a whole lot about gauges, but sunpro seems like a decent brand (?)

The autogauge 105-2305/105-2306 seems like the ticket (autogauge is autometer's budget line, so it's quality). But how would you mount it would be the problem.

Re: Tach for my '83

i had two sunpros and they both took a crap on me.. id spend the extra money for an autometer.. and if its an automatic, the tach will move around with the shifter it ifs on the column. thats why i mounted mine under the ashtray. it dont block the guages down there, you dont have to drill holes in the dash pad, and you can just take out the bottom left screw for the ashtray and get a longer one and mount the tach there (like i did)

My truck is a standard trans. I'd like a small one there. Any one have pics of tachs mounted on the steering column? Thanks for the tip on sunpro... I'll buy one once and spend the money on an auto meter.

Anyone know where to get a small rectangular digital tach? I was looking for something inexpensive to use temporarily an all i could locate were round tach both analog and digital.

I've got the small sunpro tach. Never had a problem out of them. The one my dad had, lasted 30 years, and the one in my 77 lasted 10 years and the one in my 87 lasted 5 years. they never broke, i just sold the vehicle. I've had mine in this truck for 2 years.

Maybe a little off the subject, but what would have been put in these trucks (mine's a '79) back when they were new? I have been thinking about adding a tach, but I want it to look like is belongs there, or would have been put there when the truck was pretty new.

That'd give you an idea on what it would look like with factory tach. It's amazing how few had a factory tach in the 81 up models. I've actually never seen one in person.

I like them at the A-pillar too. Bad picture, it was dusk out and the camera tries to compensate. It's a clean install.

I have a sunpro 3-3/8s on the column and I like it, it don't block enough of either gauge to matter

I had a factory tach in my 77 Blazer. Since I went with a 91 Suburban/Blazer cluster for the electric speedo, I am not sure how a factory tach would work. This is my second cluster, I would hate to cut up the plastic carrier and then find out it didn't work.

Yep all my buddies who have had a tach on the column have always just used a big hose clamp around them lol. Sunpro aint bad or I have just got like 20-30 tachs from the the local autoparts store and had no major problems as of yet!
