Re: dantes peak movie suburban

Hello; :new: Let me start by introducing my self. I am disabled due to being shot so I am limited as to what I can physically do. I have been involved with square body trucks since 2005 however I have been in love with them since my first truck in 1979. I have owned several and enjoyed many miles in them.

The first part of 2013 I started looking for a new project to keep me busy. I found a 1988 Chevrolet Suburban that had a solid body and unmolested interior. It had a four speed manual transmission and 350 tbi motor. The bad side was the motor was grenaded. It had been owned by an older couple who sold it to a guy visiting from New Zealand that came here for the winter to ski. He had never driven a stick and that explains the motor.

So speed it forward I put in a used motor that had been in Off Road Design's truggy. I got to thinking and thought since there are so many threads on the internet I would make the Dante's Peak Suburban.

Here is what I started with. Yea I know the colors are not the same. I am keeping the tan interior but going red on exterior.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...df1877_002.jpg

Since I am disabled I thought this would be an easy build because it does not require a lot of muscle or brawn. So let the picture whoring begin.

Here we start with changing the motor.

Holes in right side of pan

Holes in left side of Pan and block

Stephen from ORD helping to get the new motor in
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2.../IMG_02661.jpg

So the next step was researching the parts used on the movie truck.
Equipment needed:
1987 Chevrolet V10 Suburban
Con-ferr roof rack
Carr light bar
Warn Trans4mer brush guard
Auto hubs
Safari snorkel for an FJ80
Rear tire carrier
Lights, lots of lights!

So lets start with the Suburban.
Movies:
It is a 1987 from the door sticker and the verify sheet from the sell using the vin 1gkev16k6hf that it is a 1987 Chevrolet V10 with a 350 TBI. We know it is an automatic transmission from the movie and Cinema Vehicle Services pictures. It has a rear AC unit. It also has the end gate. It has auto hubs on it. It has the light blue cloth interior with front bucket seats and no third row seating. It's RED!
http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC07095.jpg

Metro's:
1988 Chevrolet V10 Suburban 350 TBI
4 speed manual transmission
No rear AC
Has the end gate
Has auto hubs on it
Cloth interior in tan with front bucket seats no third row seating.
It's Brown and Tan.

So the search was on for the components!

So on to the parts.

Here is the Conn-Ferr roof rack we got that needed to be widened.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...t1w60_12-1.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...n/PIC_3572.jpg

The next step was to get the correct brackets to mount it.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...7ef3968b6f.jpg http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...DSC07115-2.jpg

Off Road Unlimited
in Burbank bought Con-Ferr out and took over ownership several years ago. Maurice Rozo bought and took over the Con-Ferr name and parts from Pete Condos.

After talking to them about the build and what we needed; they provided the mounting brackets as a sponsor. Be sure to check out their web site for all kinds of neat toys. offroadunlimited.com

The next item was the WARN combo kit set up.
http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/DSC07094.jpg

I found one in California the needed the outer brush guards.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...n/IMG_0231.jpg

I talked to WARN about the parts and were told they stopped making the Combo kit in 1995. WARN stepped up and helped in completing this build. They found the mounting instructions and even a CAD. They made a set of brush guards and I paid $78.00 for the material and shipping. WARN is still working with us and are a sponsor in this build.

The lights and roof light bar.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...uburban/10.jpg

The lights appear to be KC Daylighters snf the light bar is a CARR.

September 2013
CARR Joins Build team as an official sponsor!
CARR donated P/N# 210341 which is what closely replicates the original bar on the Dantes Peak in exchange for promotional consideration.

August 2013
kchilites.com joined in as an official sponsor.
They provided the lights needed for our project. Two sets of 238 Daylighter - 6" Rnd Long Range - Black - 100 Watt and three sets of 241 69 Series - 6x9 Rect Long Range - Black - 100 Watt

Martin Senour Paints a division of Sherwin Automotive Finishes joined us as a sponsor on our project and have provided us with materials to paint the vehicle.
https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hpho...98417708_n.jpg
We went with GMC paint code 514 Red (Crimson) based on a truck I owned before and the way it faded.

Currently the truck is at the painters.

Re: dantes peak movie suburban

So the snorkel on the truck was a Safari Snorkel
https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hpho...59061465_n.jpg
That is ARB here in America. So after looking a clones from China I talked to ARB about the build. They set up a confrence call to the main company in Australia. The snorkel is for a Toyota 80 series. Since it is not a direct application of their product they could only sell one. So they offered a discounted price. Now ARB Safari is a contributor.

ClassicDash.com contacted us and offered one of their set ups for the truck.
http://coloradok5.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1379111390
http://www.classicdash.com/shopping/...out-Wiper.html

Classic Dash, formed in 2002, was the first company to create replacement ABS composite dash panels for vehicles of the muscle car era. Today the firm’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is located in Carson City, Nevada, and the company offers the most complete line of replacement dash panels.

ABS plastic sheets are sized and prepared for thermal forming, a vacuum-forming process performed at 320 degrees Fahrenheit. The material is endowed with a UV inhibitor to protect the finished panels against damage from the sun.

Custom-built to classicdash.com specifications these ABS panels are light in weight and exceedingly rigid.

Accuracy is the key feature of the Thermwood 5-axis CNC high-speed router. It consistently trims their dash panels to within .005 inch plus or minus.

Congratulations on a unique and interesting build! I look forward to seeing the final product in Wallace next year at Depot Days (I'm a local Silver Valley resident). What are the chances that we can convince you to recreate the river crossing? It's almost required, I'd think, given that the rig will be be here and all and at almost the same time of year as when the original was filmed.

Funny you mention that; Rodger Donaldson the director has been involved in the recreation too.

Here is a look at Hollywood magic.

If you look at this picture when the original was sold a few years ago you can see the snorkel was never hooked up.

On another note would you like to be our guide for the area?

The last location I have on the one used in the movie was on 05/25/2012 and that was in Council Bluffs, IA. The owner has not returned our mail.

This is the one that was sold by Celebrity Cars.

Ok, so maybe it wasn't hooked up in the original, but YOU plan to hook it up - right? No need to be a slave to perfection if the hood will be closed most of the time anyway. That's what the prop department at the time must have thought, it appears.

Interesting that you should post those images. I just re-watched the DVD tonight, and the "making of" bonus feature was excellent. I only wish they had shown more of the river crossing. I'd have like to have seen the incident when the burb was flipped by the swift runnoff flow in the N. Fork of the Cd'A River at the time.

I'd love to be your guide, but I'm afraid my work schedule is so variable I have no idea if I'll even be in the state during the second week of May next year. There are a ton of good folks around here though, so I'm sure you'll be in good hands. I see on your Facebook page that you are already in contact with both the Wallace Chamber folks as well as the Northern Pacific Depot crew. Between them, you'll be more than set.
