rear air unit
can anyone tell me if a rear unit out of a 73 fit in a 71? they look a lot a like. thanks for any help.

I haven't tried myself, but they look damn close to the '72 rear air units. I think they would, but I don't know for sure....sorry, not much help.....

thanks for the reply, i have a chance at a 73 that is in good shape but i have not seen any pictures of a 71-72 unit or have i seen one in person. thanks again.

Functionally, I believe they are basically the same.... When you strip away the plastic headliner trim from around the rear unit in a 73, what you will find is basically an old, under-dash air unit design, but without the controls. The controls for the front air run the compressor system and the rear unit simply has a fan switch on the dash. I'm pretty certain one of these units could be used as underdash air if you wanted to. They have an expansion valve rather than an orifice tube and the only potential problems with them are fans/switches/wiring issues. The high and low freon lines "T" into the front freon lines, so they operate in parallel, not in series.
You'll probably have to create your own cabinet work and any ductwork if you try to use 73 stuff in a 72 because the trucks are physically different. |
