Jeep 5 on 5 and Chev 5 on 5
 

I see a lot of Jeep 5 on 5" pattern wheels on sale near where I live, but very few Chev wheels in 16+ inch diameters. The Jeep centers are 71mm and offset MH while the Chev's are 78mm and L offset. Has anybody here ever done Jeep wheel installation on a box body? I have an 85 and 96 PU that need tires/rims and am getting tempted to try a Jeep set.

I've wondered the same thing too. I'd love to hear if anyone's tried it.

Got any friends with a jeep or hit a junkyard at night.Either way get one wheel to test fit to see.

They won't fit the Chevy right off the jeep. The center bore is to small to fit over the hub of the Chevy, but the even bigger issue is the more positive offset of the Jeep wheel. The positive offset will make the wheel sit even further under the truck...yuck... but if you want to make them work, you can use a set of 5x5 to 5x5 adapters that are 1.25" thick to remedy these issues.

I thought just the opposite for offset, but I guess there is no way to tell unless I try one. The adapters sound like a good idea, but I've heard that they have a projected life span of a year or two. I don't remember where I heard that though.

I had a set of adapters on my old '86 GMC Lwb for about 2 years before I sold it, and the guy who bought it from me still has them on there. That's over 5 years of uniterrupted service. I only had them on the rear to widen the rear track width. And I pulled trailer's all the time...car trailers, boat trailers, etc. Without any issue. Most adapters are made from aluminum, so there is no expected failure issues.

And as far as the offset issue. The Jeep's that are 5x5 are Grand Cherokee's, so the offset on them is VERY positive.

All 16x7.0" Wheels: Backspacing = 6.0" Offset = 50.8mm Bolt pattern = 5x5 (5x127mm)

All 17x7.5" Wheels: Backspacing = 6.25" Offset = 50.8mm Bolt pattern = 5x5 (5x127mm)

Where our squares, for instance, use a 15x8" wheel with 4-4.5" of backspacing. So for example, the 16x7" Cherokee wheel would be 1.5-2" further "inboard" than the 15x8" wheel. Pretty big difference ;)
