4-speed issue

I pulled the top cover off my SM465 last night to see if everything looks ok. All was well, but when I put the cover back on, it seems like the shifter is stuck in 1st gear. I don't know where my problem is, if it went back together the same as coming apart, I figured all was well. Any idea if it's in the gearbox or in the shift cover?

Thanks

Re: 4-speed issue

Something is probably out of alignment in the transmission.

Normally when I take the cover off the old 4 speeds I put them in neutral, remove the shifter and then the cover. I guess I have been lucky so far, have not had a problem.

Hopefully some one else will chime in on how to align the gear sliders.

Cool, thanks. I might just have to tear it apart again and see if anything looks "off". I made sure the three forks were in line with the gears they slide into and it went together well. Look mom, no hammer!;)

There is a specific way to take out and reinstall top plate with shift forks. Its always good to a OE Service manual or Chilton handy.

I posted this in my build, but figured I'd throw it in here too.

Here is an online manual for this gear box.

KINDA REMINDS ME OF TAKING THE COVER OFF OF MY FIRST WATCH, & STOPPING THE LITTLE WHEEL THINGY WITH MY FINGER, & THEN HOLDING MY BREATH & HOPING I COULD START IT AGAIN. (40 SUM YEARS AGO) ONE THING I'VE LEARNED... IF YOU LOOK LONG ENOUGH FOR A NON-EXSISTING PROBLEM.. SOONER OR LATER YOU'LL FIND ONE (OR HAVE ONE):lol: JOHN

Re: 4-speed issue

You have to put it halfway in reverse to get it to drop down. Move the reverse sliding gear till the groove is in the opening. You may have to put a little tension on it to keep it from sliding back. Then put the gear shift hale way in reverse & drop it on.

Had the same problem about a week ago. Wrenchbender nailed it. I found the last thing to come out is the finger holding the yoke were you want it.
