They are traction bars for the rear end. See them a lot on sports cars and 2wd trucks. Especially muscle cars.

What? You guys have not seen the latest technology on front bumper guards? They make good "rice" pushers. If you read the "Chit Chat forum" I posted a question - " How do you talk to an insurance adjustor?". I was rear ended and need some protection for the back. I thought of putting them behind the roll pan for added strength.
Okay, if you guessed traction bars - your right!!! These were custom made for an '87 SWB truck. Truck runs low 13's with a posi 3.73 rear. Should make 12's with a planned 4.11 posi rear swap. '87 truck has a 454 full competition cam, single plane intake, big a$$ carb and custom internal parts. Horse power not dynoed but I guess over 500 horses easily. Oh yea, its uses a mixture of gas and JET FUEL!!!! Quote from a drag race tree operator - "In twenty+ years I've never seen a truck hookup light that one. It really hauls a$$."

The tractions bars are custom designed to wrap the axel and bolt onto the leaf springs. The bars do go below the axel. After installing the bars the "spring" action on a WOT will be minimal. Like the '87, mine has the thick leafspring and four inch drop on the back. Without the thick leaf spring, WOT with a beer spilling 700R4 first gear drops the back and raises the front alot. These bars will reduce the "back spring" by a ton. The ride will be a little stiffer too. Why the bars? I'm planning on retiring the tired 305. When the new hot engine is dropped in I don't want to start breaking things in the suspension or drive train. Better to be prepared or I'll have pay later and possibly cause damage the engine. The bars were sandblasted, primed and painted. I could not put them on by myself this weekend. Hopefully we'll have some good weather during the week. My brother and I will install and take pics along the way. I post some when I'm done.
It's better to pull away from "ricers" than push them!!!
