Shakes at 55 to 70 MPH
 

Ok been having a problem lately and its trying to figure out what is causing my truck to shake at 55 to 70 MPH. I was thinking it would partly the rotors changed those out and now i think it could be the balance of my tires or maybe my drive line is out of round.Any other ideas?? please really need this fixed

My truck shook at 55 to 70 mph. The rear tire was on the axle crooked. The part of the axle where the wheel slides over was hit with a hammer. I had to file it down so the wheel went on straight. Spin all of your wheels and see if they turn straight or not. They may just need balanced. Good luck.

Shaking is usually associated with tires. Even if they are "balanced", they may not be "round". A good tire store should be able to determine this and correct it if needed. "Truing" is essentially a big lathe that can cut the diameter to the point of being round. You do lose a bit of tread in the high spots, but the tires will run much smoother and last longer over-all. They can also tell if you have a bent wheel at the same time, as this could cause it too.

Of course this also assumes that you have the basic chassis in good working order too. The ball-joints, tie-rods, control arm bushings, wheel bearings, etc should be in good shape. These things are generally issues of front end wobbles or wandering though, not all-over shaking.

Rotors usually show up as a feeiling in the steering wheel when braking. I'd rotate and balance the tires first and maybe have them check for roundness/trueness as longhair said.

I'm no expert though...

Parking brake. U joints. Unbalanced shaft.

I vote for the u joint as a likely cause of the shakes!

It happened lately? If you aren't hard on your trucks drivetrain, it probably isn't a U-Joint. You might have thrown a weight off one of the wheels.

It sounded to me like it started recently.

I mentioned the way you do/don't drive your truck so you could most likely rule out other things like a U Joint and look at balancing your tires like everyone else here said.

Ya i'm thinking that it is that and i need to get them balanced asap so i dont have to worry about it anymore.

I would say check the tires first, but just because you drive sensibly, doesn't rule out a u joint...they will wear out eventually, no matter how you baby them. It doesn't necessarily have to be loose to cause a vibration, sometimes they get stiff (expecially if it sits alot) and will cause a vibration.

My tires for 5 year old I change from back to front every 7000 miles to keep tire round. check air pressure once a mouth. I grease all front end bearing and check for losen in bears. 70 knight:chevy:

How 'bout some more technical clues?

* Does it do it all the time, or come and go?
* Does it do it coasting with the engine off (or conversely, stopped and revving the engine in neutral)?
* Can you jack the rear end up and recreate the vibration on jackstands?
* Have you changed anything recently?

most of the shakes iv'e experienced have been tire balancing.........45 and 65 seem to be two speeds where it really shows.
