Re: 5 speeds

Install a NV4500. More expensive and he will not break it. Well, unless he does something he shouldn't do anyway.

arent they a little over kill for a 2wd street truck

Re: 5 speeds

one nv4500 is cheaper than a few t5's... generally it may be overkill but most would agree that a t5 is underkill for a truck

Re: 5 speeds

Get an NV3500 or even a HLM60 5 speed from a 91-98 Chevy truck........

Stay away from the 88-90 Trans though (HM290 getrag).....JUNK.

NV4500 is a big slow shifting dump truck transmission you'll hate it in a fast 2wd street truck. LOL. NV3500 93 and newer (chevy) HURST still makes a short throw shifter setup for it w/chrome stick and all! i Have one i got for xmas

so you know a trans from behind a late model 4.3 or 4.8 vortec (99 and newer) WILL NOT WORK ! bellhouse pattern is different.

91 HLM60 5spd (RPO MG5) in my truck has well over 400k on it and still works fine just kinda noisy. good trannies...most guys will say they are junk and weak but there the ones that never put the right fluid in them or overheat them. guy on fullsizechevy.com took out his 4.3 v6 and put in a 8.1 big block vortec out of a newer chevy truck and is still running his nv3500 5spd he had stock behind his 4.3v6, has over 20 track passes on it and daily drives it.

Re: 5 speeds

they are only rated at 300 lb ft torque just like the t5 wouldnt we have the same issue of breaking things? this thing is a 2wd 77 with a 400 street cam stock heads. holley intake and carb. apparently its making at least 300 lbft torque due to this is the second one he exploded. the first one actually blewe the case apart and peeled three gears smooth and this one lost 3rd gear. yes he beats the hell out of it but thats why he has it. if the 3500 will work thats fine i just did some research on it and they said they were only good for 300 lbft torque

Re: 5 speeds

I know what they are rated at i'm telling you they put the trans stock behind 350 vortecs and 5.3 vortecs and what else do i have to say if you want evidence i can link you several threads showing an NV3500 behind an 8.1L big block vortec scratching tires or SEVERAl trucks on performancetruck.net running stock NV3500's behind cammed or supercharged 5.3's and 4.8's and heck even some 6.0 vortec motors swapped in with NV3500's behind them.

i wouldn't believe that rating at all. that's just to save their butt .

Re: 5 speeds

To make a T5 survive behind your combination, look into the T5Z (330 ft-lbs) or look up a company like astro performance that specializes in built T5s. Otherwise, my suggestion would be to upgrade to a TKO series or a T56. The nv3500 will survive behind a stock to mild 350, but miss a gear and you will have another blown up trans.
