odd transfer case

i have a buddy whom just got a 4 wheel drive rolling chassis less motor out of some weeds. he sent me a cell pic which i will try to upload later when i get home . but this thing is gm , well its got a chevy belled 400 turbo and looks like a 241 yet it has both front and rear pass drop driveshafts .the rear output is a fixed yoke . where the rear driveshaft would normaly exit there is just a housing and the rear end has a offset center ? i'm stumped

Jeeps (Wagoneer,Cherokee, and J-model) used the TH transmissions for quite a while.

Re: odd transfer case

yeah we've got a few of those but those 400's typicaly were with that quadratrac and had a amc bell . this has a chevy bell pattern

Re: odd transfer case

yeah it just a jeep quadratrac where they had a small block chevy in it , that explains the chevy bell pattern . thanks everyone -steve

I know before Quadra-Trac,in the late-60s,Jeep ran 327s.I figured by the time the Quadra-Trac came out they were all the AMC motors.I`m curious,do you think this was all swapped around since they did mate TH400s to that t-case?

Re: odd transfer case

I wondered if that Chevy trans might have been swapped-into the earlier Jeep frame since Jeep wasn`t using GM motors in`88 and had stopped using the Quadra-Trac by then, too,AFAIK.Just my curiousity.

Wasn't a Chevy 327! ;)

It was an AMC/Rambler/Nash/Hudson based motor. You'd see them a lot in Ambassador sedans up until 66 or so. It came about as a result of Packard screwing AMC/Rambler out of a parts sharing deal in the 50's.

Alot of them old jeeps ran the buick V6 and 327 V8 to if I am not mistaken. Might explain the GM bell housing.
