Need help

I know these subjects have been covered many, many times and there are varied opinions out there. I will listen to all of them. I have searched for other posts of a similar topics that may have given me some clues where to start.

Here is the situation:
Just installed this new crate engine.

After talking to my transmission guy, I was convinced to upgrade to the 700r4, after all this truck is going to be for my daily commute - about 23 miles each way. ( At least for now ! )

After installation, the engine fired right up and ran great - without a transmissison attachted.

Using a tow dolly from Uhaul, delivered truck to transmission shop ( always get the insurance from Uhaul-just in case the tow dolly falls of the ball when towing, like mine did - that's another story)

When the transmission shop called and said it was ready, naturally I was excited to drive it. It ran like crap.

Transmission shop told me that they could not get WOT from accelerator pedal. Ok, so i fixed that. That made big difference.
Runs better.

I have also been tinkering with the timing. Right now it is set around 11°-12° BTDC.
(Vacuum advance disconnected from non-ported source on carb)
Runs even better.

Moved the linkage to the accelerator pump to the first hole on Edel 1406. Got rid of the hesitation.
Runs better still.

So here is my problem.
I am not pleased with the shifting form gear to gear.

1st gear only holds on for about 2-3 seconds before shifting into 2nd.
2nd gear hold a bit longer then into 3rd.
3rd gear holds forever before hitting the OD.
Once in the OD, the engine surges. It seems to bog then not then bog then not.

These shifting patterns are only when driving gently. When right foot gets heavy, I can wind the 2nd and 3rd gears out far, but OD still surges.

Questions:
Could the 1406 be running to rich in the OD? I plan on trying to change meter rods/jets to run leaner - maybe a 7 or even 12 and then try.

Could these problems be a result of an improperly set TV cable ?
It makes me wonder because transmision shop said they could not achieve WOT with the pedal, but probably set it by hand.

Any and all help welcome.

Bim

Have you looked at these?

Was the TV cable reset after the WOT issue was solved? The transmission shop let it go like that? When you build a 700R4 you can not have a "I just fixed your transmission thats it" additude. Their responsible for TV set-up.

Sounds like a tv cable issue to me. I would take it right back to the shop and make them readjust it. If they did the install they should have set it up properly. What rear gears do you have? what rpm are you turning when in od?

Re: Need help

Thanks for the ideas, guys.
I do not know what gears I have and have no tach.

I did readjust the accelerator pedal so that I now have WOT with the pedal, then set the TV cable according to the procedures found all over the interwebs.

Shifts much better now , however the OD gear takes alot to get to.

On another note, just found out heater core is leaking.
If it's not one thing, it's another, huh ?
At least it's fun fixing them.

Re: Need help

If the butt gears in your truck are already high, then the OD will make it like a dog. Was the truck at high RPM when driving at 60mph? Is that the reason for switching to the OD tranny?

I also agree on the TV cable being out of asdjustment.

Well its been a while since I posted this.

Set the TV cable properly and discovered that the issue with the surging was actually the TCC lock-up cycling.

Was able to adjust and working well now.

Thanks for all the input guys !!
